To prepare for the return of international travelers, that Australian companies estimate for December 2021, the Australian government is reportedly testing a mobile application to process eVisitors.
Modelled on New Zealand's NZeTA, this application would scan the MRZ zone of the passport and/or read the passport chip to retrieve the traveller's information. Next, a KYC (know-your-customer) would check that the applicant in possession of the phone is actually the one on the passport, by taking a video selfie for example.
Let's hope it doesn't fail as badly as New Zealand, rated 2/5 on average by Internet users because of its approximations when reading passports...
