From the end of the year, the British government will introduce an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), which will be compulsory for all travelers without a visa, even for short stays or transit on the basis of ESTA.
If your trip is long term, you will need to apply to the authorities for a visa to stay in the UK.
Thanks to this new electronic system, the Ministry of the Interior has declared that it will increase fairness and efficiency, and discourage so-called illegal entries. The system will also help to crack down on organized human trafficking networks, which have multiplied considerably in recent years. The ETA will enable more thorough security checks to be carried out, and more informed decisions to be made on whether travellers should be allowed into the UK.
This electronic document is intended to replace the sticker currently placed manually in passports with a digital record.
Please note that from October 1, 2021, it will no longer be possible to travel to the UK using an EU, EEA or Swiss ID card.
