Almost a year to the day since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree on Tuesday approving a facilitated visa regime for citizens of 19 countries.
Citizens of the specified countries may obtain a tourist visa for a maximum duration of six months if they have a hotel reservation, according to the decree published on the government portal.
The countries concerned are : Bahrain, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, North Korea, Thailand, Turkey And Philippines. Unsurprisingly, no European or Western country appears on the list..
Last week, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrovannounced that Russia was planning to introduce a visa-free regime for citizens of 11 "friendly" countries, and more flexible entry conditions for citizens of six other countries.
Mikhail Mishustin also said that the country was planning to relaunch the electronic visa system it had introduced before the Covid crisis. The implementing decree must be validated by June 1, 2023.
