Raising the entrance fee to these islands, located off the coast of Ecuador, should help preserve the environment while developing sustainable tourism and stimulating the local economy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Entry fees for foreigners will be doubled from $100 to $200 (<span class=\"currency-convertor\" data-amount=\"100\" data-currency=\"USD\">86 &#8364;<\/span> \u00e0 <span class=\"currency-convertor\" data-amount=\"200\" data-currency=\"USD\">171 &#8364;<\/span>).<\/li>\n<li>Rates for Ecuadorian citizens will increase fivefold (to USD 30).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>These changes should be implemented within the next 6 months and generate up to $40 million a year, compared with the current $14-18 million.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the Minister of Tourism <strong>Niels Olsen<\/strong>The Gal\u00e1pagos archipelago has been adversely affected by the introduction of invasive species and food shortages as a result of popular tourist sites. The park was once on UNESCO's list of World Heritage in Danger.
