After months of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/en\/blog\/sri-lanka-single-entry-visa\/\">and changes of course<\/a>the country finally reinstated its<strong>electronic travel authorization (ETA)<\/strong> following the election of the new president <strong>Anura Kumara Dissanayaka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision puts an end to a chaotic period which began last April when the previous government replaced ETA with an electronic visa, before abruptly suspending it on August 2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/en\/blog\/sri-lanka-evisa\/\">For nearly two months, travelers had to obtain their visas on arrival, creating traffic jams and frustration at the island's borders.<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The return of ETA is not without hitches. The new Minister of Foreign Affairs, <strong>Vijitha Herath<\/strong>acknowledged some technical difficulties during the launch. Despite some instabilities, the <a href=\"https:\/\/eta.gov.lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">eta.gov.lk<\/a> is now operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The government has officially reinstated the previous visa issuance system, effective from 12.00 midnight today.<\/p>- Anura Kumara Dissanayake (@anuradisanayake) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anuradisanayake\/status\/1839317278829302233?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 26, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For tourists, the cost of the ETA remains fixed at 50 US dollars, excluding bank charges. Once approved, the authorization is valid for 6 months and allows a 30-day stay with 2 possible entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A U-turn on free visas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reactivation of ETA is accompanied by a U-turn on the promise of free visas. August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/en\/blog\/sri-lanka-35-visa-free-countries-from-october-1-2024\/\">the former government had announced with great fanfare the abolition of visa fees for 35 countries<\/a>including France, Belgium and Canada. <em>This measure, which was supposed to boost tourism, did not see the light of day in the end.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vijitha Herath explains this back-pedaling by administrative obstacles: \"<em>Although approved by the previous cabinet, Parliament was dissolved before the measure was approved.<\/em>\u201c. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/en\/blog\/visa-exemption-on-arrival-in-sri-lanka-finally-postponed-sine-die\/\">Without the backing of the new Parliament<\/a>So it's impossible to make it free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only 7 countries currently benefit from free ETA: China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia and Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A tourism sector in difficulty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These delays in visa policy come at a difficult time for Sri Lankan tourism. <strong>Priyantha Fernando<\/strong>Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), points to visa complications as one of the reasons for the slowdown in arrivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-text-align-left\"><blockquote><p>The figures speak for themselves: between September 1 and 17, just 92,639 international tourists set foot on Sri Lankan soil. A score that falls short of expectations and jeopardizes the ambitious target of 2.3 million visitors by 2024.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behind the scenes of an administrative crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sri Lankan visa saga reveals the backstage of a deeper administrative crisis. The contract for the new electronic visa system, awarded without a public tender, has caused an uproar. Petitions have been filed, alleging irregularities in the selection process and adverse financial consequences for the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new e-Visa system imposed higher costs on the government: up to $18.50 per application, compared with only $2 for the old ETA system managed by the state-owned company. <strong>SLTMobitel<\/strong>.
