These devices, which can send messages, issue SOS alerts, track a route and share one's position without requiring cellular service, may be illegal in some countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The example of India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In India, the use of satellite communication equipment is prohibited without prior government authorization. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiacode.nic.in\/bitstream\/123456789\/15410\/1\/the_indian_wireless_telegraphy_act%2C_1933.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">under the 1933 Wireless Telegraphy Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"676\" height=\"63\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-28-at-16.24.59.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7019727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-28-at-16.24.59.png 676w, https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-28-at-16.24.59-300x28.png 300w, https:\/\/www.visamundi.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-28-at-16.24.59-18x2.png 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DESjEsxNfBT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a Scottish hiker was arrested at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport<\/a> for carrying a GPS device <strong>Garmin inReach<\/strong>. Similarly, a Canadian ultramarathon runner was arrested in Goa for carrying the same device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian authorities have flagged the device as illegal under the country's strict regulations on satellite communication devices. Travelers must obtain prior authorization from the Ministry of Telecommunications to bring such devices into the country. Violation of these regulations may result in detention, confiscation of the device and legal sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cgibirmingham.gov.in\/page\/display\/124\/12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Birmingham consulate advises that a simple declaration to customs on arrival may suffice.<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I be sure that I am authorized to travel with the device?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.garmin.com\/en-US\/?faq=Dq3CEPZjfRAhtToGD4Yrz9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Garmin provides a list of countries where these devices are regulated or prohibited.<\/a>These include Afghanistan, Sudan, Cuba and Myanmar. These devices are receivers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">liabilities<\/span> which do not transmit signals to the outside world, relying solely on data from GNSS\/GPS satellites to calculate parameters such as position and speed.
