Obtaining an ETA for Kenya: preparation and arrival in Kenya

Kenya is a popular destination for many travellers, attracted by its breathtaking scenery and rich wildlife. To take full advantage of your stay in Kenya and the associated visa waiver, it's essential to prepare for your entry by obtaining an ETA, an electronic authorization that greatly facilitates formalities on arrival.

How do I obtain an ETA for Kenya?

To travel to Kenya, citizens of most countries must obtain an ETA. Since 2024, the Kenyan government has introduced an online authorization application system, called ETA. This system greatly simplifies administrative procedures and saves time when arriving in the country.

How to apply for an ETA

  1. Create an account on the official Kenyan government website dedicated to these electronic documents (etakenya.go.ke) or via our agency. You'll need a valid e-mail address and a password.
  2. Fill in the application form with your personal details, passport details and travel information. Make sure that all the information you provide is correct and up-to-date.
  3. Attach the required documents (recent passport photo, copy of passport information page, etc.) in the formats and file sizes indicated on the site.
  4. Pay ETA fees by credit or debit card. The cost varies according to the type of visa requested (tourist, business, etc.). Prices generally range from US$30 to US$55, excluding agency fees if required.
  5. Wait for your application to be approved. This usually takes between 2 and 7 working days. You will receive an e-mail notification when your ETA is approved.
  6. Print out your ETA in PDF format and take it with you on your trip to Kenya.

Validity and authorized length of stay

The Kenyan ETA is valid for a single entry and a maximum stay of 90 days in the country. It must be used within 3 months of the date of approval. If you wish to extend your stay, you will need to apply to the local immigration authorities before your current document expires.

Arriving in Kenya: what are the airport formalities like?

Once you've obtained your ETA, it's time to prepare for your arrival in Kenya. Here's what happens when you arrive at the airport:

  1. Present yourself at the immigration counter with your passport and printed ETA. Officers will check your documents and take your fingerprints. Kenya has dedicated 24/7 counters on arrival in Kenya, for all popular border crossings, all eligible.
  2. Collect your baggage and proceed to the customs control area. You'll need to fill in a declaration form, indicating the items to be declared (cash, taxable items, etc.).
  3. Pass the health check, if necessary. Depending on your country of origin or the countries you visited before arriving in Kenya, a yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required.
  4. Leave the arrivals area, where you can meet your loved ones, take a cab or rent a car.

Practical tips to make your arrival easier

Find out about formalities requirements

Certain nationalities benefit from ETA exemptions to enter Kenya (including Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda). Be sure to check whether you qualify for these exemptions, and if so, apply for your ETA well in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises.

A valid passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry into Kenya. If your passport expires in less than 6 months, remember to renew it before applying for your ETA and setting off on your trip. The ETA is associated with a passport number.

Prepare the necessary documents

It's vital that you prepare all the documents you need to facilitate your entry into Kenya. In addition to your printed ETA, don't forget any vaccination certificates, your return or onward flight tickets, and proof of accommodation (hotel reservation, home address, etc.).

Arrive in good physical and mental shape

Kenya's entry formalities can take a long time, especially if you arrive during rush hour. Be patient and keep smiling when dealing with airport officials. A little courtesy goes a long way.
