Electronic visaRwanda offers an electronic e-Visa that allows foreigners to enter the country since 1 January 2018. This scheme has been extended to a single regional visa: the East Africa Visa, valid for Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya. If you wish to explore East Africa starting from Rwanda, this multiple-entry visa opens the doors to three countries in a single online application. Reserved for tourist stays, it is valid for 90 days and must be used within 3 months of issue.
01 · The essentials
The Rwanda e-Visa has existed since 1 January 2018 and is obtained entirely online before departure.
Minimum validity of 6 months from the departure date of the trip is required for all travellers.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all travellers arriving from an endemic country.

The Rwanda e-Visa is an electronic visa introduced by the Rwandan government on 1 January 2018. It allows foreign nationals to enter Rwanda through Kigali International Airport and land border crossings along the borders with neighbouring countries.
This scheme is part of a broader framework: the East Africa Visa, a regional visa shared by Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. If you wish to begin your East Africa itinerary in Rwanda, you submit your application to the Rwandan authorities. The visa obtained is then valid for border crossings between the three countries as many times as you like.
This is a genuine electronic visa — not a mere travel authorisation. The document is issued in digital form; it is strongly recommended to print it in colour before presenting yourself for boarding or at the border crossing. This visa is exclusively for tourism: working or studying in Rwanda on this permit is strictly prohibited.
02 · Eligibility
The East Africa Visa via Rwanda is accessible to the majority of European, American, Asian and Oceanian nationalities. However, the entry regime for Rwanda is more complex than it first appears: several exemption categories dispense certain travellers from any prior formality.
Citizens of member countries of the African Union, the Commonwealth and the Francophonie receive a free visa on arrival, for a stay of up to 30 days. Nationals of member states of the East African Community (Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan) benefit from an even more favourable regime: they receive a free visa on arrival for stays of up to 6 months.
An additional list of countries may obtain a 90-day visa free of charge on arrival, including Angola, Benin, the Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Haiti, Mauritius, the Philippines, Senegal, the Seychelles, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Príncipe, Singapore and Qatar.
For nationalities that do not benefit from any of these exemptions, two options exist: apply for the East Africa e-Visa online before departure (recommended), or obtain a visa on arrival in Rwanda. This second option is available to all eligible nationalities, but it carries risks of long waiting times and constraints related to available payment methods on site.
Free visa on arrival for 6 months (Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan).
Free visa on arrival for up to 30 days.
Free 90-day visa on arrival (Angola, Ghana, Philippines, Singapore, Qatar, etc.).
East Africa Visa online (recommended) or visa on arrival possible — allow sufficient lead time.
03 · Required documents

Assembling a complete file is essential to obtain the East Africa Visa. The Rwandan authorities pay close attention to the quality of the documents submitted: a missing or non-compliant document can delay — or even jeopardise — the granting of the visa.
Beyond the documents listed below, the application form also includes questions about your marital status, the names of your parents and spouse, the places you plan to visit, your point of entry and whether you have previously visited Rwanda. Have this information to hand when completing the online form.
04 · The procedure
Set your travel dates and itinerary between Rwanda, Uganda and/or Kenya. The exact arrival date in Rwanda is essential for the validity of the visa — do not start the process until your programme is finalised.
Prepare your passport (valid for at least 6 months), a recent passport photo, the accommodation booking in your name, your full itinerary and your yellow fever vaccination record.
Access the official Rwandan government portal and fill in the East Africa Visa application form. Enter your personal details, marital status, the names of your parents and spouse, and the places you plan to visit.
Upload copies of your documents (passport, hotel booking, itinerary, vaccination certificate). Check the compliance of each document before submission.
The fee is 100 USD. Payment is made online when you submit your file.
Your East Africa Visa will be sent to you in digital form. Print it in colour before presenting yourself at the airport or border crossing.
Present your printed e-Visa together with your passport to the immigration authorities. You may enter via Kigali International Airport or through authorised land border crossings.
05 · Validity & conditions
The East Africa Visa is valid for one initial entry into Rwanda. Once in the region, you may cross the border between the three countries (Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya) as many times as you wish, with no restriction on the number of crossings. However, the total duration of stay — across all three countries combined — must not exceed 90 days.
The visa starts running from the date of first entry into Rwanda, not from the date of issue. You have 3 months from the date of issue to use this visa: if you do not enter Rwanda within this period, the document expires.
It is important to note that this visa is strictly for tourism. It does not permit work, paid activity or study in Rwanda, Uganda or Kenya under any circumstances. Any professional activity requires specific residence permits.
If you wish to extend your stay beyond the authorised period, you should contact a local immigration office to request a visa extension. This must be done before your current visa expires.
Kigali International Airport and land border crossings (check e-Visa availability at your chosen crossing).
Each minor must hold their own named East Africa Visa. No exceptions are provided.
A visa extension is possible via a Rwandan immigration office, subject to approval.
Still possible for eligible nationalities, but risk of long waiting times and payment constraints to be expected.
06 · Before you go
Obtaining the East Africa Visa is a key step, but it is not sufficient on its own for a well-prepared trip to Rwanda and East Africa. Here are some general recommendations to help you approach your stay with peace of mind.
Health and vaccinations: beyond yellow fever — mandatory if you are coming from an endemic country — it is recommended to consult a doctor or travel vaccination centre at least 4 to 6 weeks before departure. Vaccines against typhoid, hepatitis A and hepatitis B are frequently advised for travellers to East Africa. The question of antimalarial prophylaxis should be discussed with your doctor depending on your specific itinerary.
Your passport: check its expiry date well before booking your flights. It must be valid for at least 6 months after the departure date of your trip across the three covered countries. Also make sure it has enough blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
Accommodation: the named hotel booking is a mandatory document for the visa application. Make sure you have written confirmation showing your name and the exact address of the establishment in Rwanda. Refundable bookings can be a practical solution if your programme is not yet fully confirmed.
The East Africa Visa via Rwanda is an electronic tourist e-Visa that opens the doors to Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya in a single online application. Valid for 90 days from your first entry into Rwanda, it allows multiple border crossings between the three countries. The application file must be submitted before departure — it cannot be obtained online from within Rwanda — and must include a copy of the passport, named proof of accommodation, the travel itinerary and the yellow fever vaccination record. Print the visa in colour before boarding and present yourself at the border crossing with all your documents.
