3 options for Benin

Choose the visa that fits your trip. Fully online process, real-time tracking.

Since 2018, Benin has replaced its traditional consular procedures with an electronic visa — the e-Visa — accessible from any country, 24/7, without visiting an embassy. Whether you are travelling for tourism, business, volunteering or to visit family, three options cover stays ranging from 30 to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Understanding how this visa works — who can apply, which documents to gather, how much time to allow — is the key to a relaxed and well-prepared trip to the shores of the Gulf of Guinea.

01 · The essentials

The Benin e-Visa: a genuine electronic visa, 100% online

100% online

Since 2018, the Benin e-Visa is obtained entirely online — no visit to an embassy or consulate is required.

6-month passport

Your ordinary passport must remain valid for at least 6 months after your departure date from Benin, regardless of the option chosen.

3 options

Three e-Visa options are available: 30 days single entry, 30 days multiple entry and 90 days multiple entry.

Benin adopted the e-Visa in 2018 to modernise and simplify access to its territory. This is not a simple travel authorisation (like the American ESTA or the Australian ETA, reserved for nationals exempt from visa requirements): the Beninese e-Visa is a genuine electronic visa, mandatory for all non-exempt nationalities, obtained online before departure.

In practice, the entire procedure takes place online. You do not need to visit the Beninese embassy or a consulate. Once your application is approved, the visa is sent to you by email as a digital document. Consider printing it if the Beninese authorities require a paper copy at the port of entry: the fee remains the same whether it is presented on screen or on paper.

The e-Visa is accepted at all entry points in Benin: land borders, seaports and airports. There is no visa on arrival: the application must be made before boarding your flight.

Good to know

Transit through Benin is possible without an e-Visa for a maximum duration of 24 hours, provided you hold an onward ticket. Beyond that, a standard e-Visa is required, even for extended transit.

02 · Eligibility

Who needs to apply for an e-Visa? Exemptions and rules by nationality

The e-Visa is intended for nationals of countries that do not benefit from a visa exemption granted by Benin. Current exemptions apply to several categories of countries, with different authorised lengths of stay depending on nationality:

  • African nationals (entire continent) and Chinese nationals: exempt from visa for stays of up to 30 days.
  • Haiti, Indonesia, Israel: exempt for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Hong Kong, Singapore: exempt for stays of up to 14 days only.

For all other nationalities — including European, North American, South American, Middle Eastern and Asian nationals not mentioned above — the e-Visa is mandatory before every trip to Benin.

Africa and China

Visa exemption for the entire African continent and China — stay authorised up to 30 days without prior formalities.

Haiti, Indonesia, Israel

Extended exemption of 90 days for these three nationalities — no visa required for short and medium-length stays.

Hong Kong and Singapore

Exemption limited to 14 days only — beyond that, an e-Visa must be obtained before departure.

All other nationalities

e-Visa mandatory — Europeans, North Americans, Oceanians, unmentioned Asians, Middle Eastern nationals.

Minors are not exempt

All travellers of a nationality eligible for the e-Visa, including minor children, must have their own e-Visa. Each application is personal and linked to an individual passport number. It is possible to add several travellers to a single online application; each will receive a separate named e-Visa linked to their own passport number.

An important point regarding the return ticket: unlike the practice in some countries, Benin does not require a return ticket to obtain the e-Visa. However, it is advisable to have a clear idea of your travel dates, as the arrival date declared on the form automatically becomes the validity start date of the visa once on the territory.

03 · The procedure

How to apply for the Benin e-Visa: step by step

The Benin e-Visa application is designed to be accessible and quick. Before you start, gather your documents and check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure date from Benin. Payment is made by credit/debit card when you submit the form: have your card to hand.

  1. 1
    Choose your e-Visa option

First identify the type of visa that matches your situation: 30 days single entry, 30 days multiple entry or 90 days multiple entry. The option you choose determines the applicable fee. Also select the purpose of travel (tourism, business, NGO/volunteering, family visit).

  2. 2
    Complete the online form

Access the application form and enter your personal details, your ordinary passport data (surname, given name, number, expiry date) and your itinerary. Take care when entering your arrival date in Benin: this will define the start of your e-Visa validity.

  3. 3
    Provide your accommodation address

Enter the address of your accommodation in Benin. If you plan to travel between several cities, the address of your first stop is sufficient. For an airport transit, enter the name of the relevant airport.

  4. 4
    Provide your billing details

Enter a valid billing address and a phone number. These details allow the teams to contact you if additional verification is required before your application is approved.

  5. 5
Pay the consular fees by credit/debit card

Payment is made exclusively by credit/debit card, online, at the time of submission. The amount varies depending on the option chosen. Payment by any other method is not possible.

  6. 6
Submit your application and wait for a response

Once the application is submitted, the processing time is 2 to 3 business days. It is recommended to apply at least 7 days before departure to allow a safety margin in case additional documents are requested.

  7. 7
    Receive your e-Visa by email

If approved, you will receive your e-Visa by email. Check that all information is correct. If the Beninese authorities require it at the entry point, present a printed version. Once the e-Visa has been issued, it is no longer possible to amend the information: no correction can be made after issuance.

Practical tip

You can apply as early as possible before your departure — at a minimum 3 days before, but ideally 7 days or more in advance. This margin protects you in case of additional verification and avoids last-minute stress. Also, make sure to enter your arrival date accurately: any error cannot be corrected after the visa has been issued.

04 · Documents & conditions

Passport, family travel and conditions to meet

The conditions for obtaining the Benin e-Visa are relatively straightforward. The main requirements are a valid ordinary passport and consistent information declared on the form.

Documents and information to prepare
  • Valid ordinary passportMust remain valid for at least 6 months after the planned departure date from Benin. Diplomatic or service passports may be subject to different rules.
  • Arrival date in BeninThis date is essential: it marks the start of the e-Visa validity. Make sure you have confirmed your travel dates before completing the form.
  • Accommodation address in BeninName and address of the hotel or accommodation. For an airport transit, the name of the airport is sufficient.
  • Information on the purpose of travelTourism, business, NGO/volunteering or family visit — specify the exact purpose matching your situation.
  • Credit/debit card for paymentConsular fees are paid exclusively online by credit/debit card at the time of submission.

Family travel with minor children: each child, even an infant, must have their own passport and their own named e-Visa. You will need to provide, with the application, a colour copy of each child's identity card, their family record book or birth certificate, and the corresponding flight tickets. An exit authorisation is not required unless the accompanying adults are not the parents.

Note that no return ticket is required to obtain the Benin e-Visa. Similarly, travel insurance is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended to cover medical costs and cancellations.

Errors cannot be corrected after issuance

Once your e-Visa has been issued, no amendment or correction is possible. Carefully check every piece of information entered — surname, given name, passport number, arrival date — before submitting your application and proceeding to payment. If an error is detected after issuance, a new application must be submitted, incurring new consular fees.

Extension

If your e-Visa expires while you are still on Beninese territory, you must contact the Direction de l'Émigration et de l'Immigration, located at 1278 avenue Jean-Paul II, quartier Cadjehoun, Cotonou, Benin, to submit an extension request. This administrative process should be initiated well before the visa expires.

05 · Fees & validity

Three options, three fees: understanding the consular charges

The Benin e-Visa comes in three options corresponding to different durations and entry modes. The fee varies depending on the option chosen, but remains the same regardless of the declared purpose of travel (tourism, business, NGO, family visit). Official consular fees are paid directly online by credit/debit card.

Note: applications processed at an embassy are systematically more expensive (a surcharge of 10 €). The electronic route therefore remains the most economical.

The validity period of the e-Visa starts from the arrival date declared on the form. It is therefore this date, not the date of visa issuance, that marks the start of the clock. For the 30-day e-Visa, you have 30 continuous days of presence on the territory from that entry date. For the 90-day e-Visa, the same logic applies over 90 days.

Multiple-entry options allow you to leave and return to Benin several times during the total validity period — particularly useful for business travellers or visitors making round trips in the region.

Start of validity

Validity begins on the arrival date declared on the form — not on the date of e-Visa issuance.

Single vs. multiple entry

Single entry only allows one entry into the territory. Multiple entry allows repeated round trips within the total duration (30 or 90 days).

Choosing the duration

Choose the duration that matches your planned stay. It is not possible to extend an e-Visa online once issued — only the Immigration Directorate can grant an extension, upon an in-person request in Cotonou.

Multiple travellers

A single form can cover multiple travellers. Each visa issued is named and linked to the individual passport number of its holder.

06 · Before you go

Preparation checklist and tips for a well-organised trip

Once your e-Visa is obtained, your trip to Benin can take shape concretely. But beyond visa formalities, a few practical preparations are worth anticipating to avoid unpleasant surprises once you arrive.

Pre-departure checklist for Benin
  • Check passport validityAt least 6 months of residual validity after the planned departure date from Benin, for each traveller — including children.
  • Confirm your travel dates before submitting the applicationThe arrival date entered on the form becomes the e-Visa validity start date — it cannot be changed after issuance.
  • Choose the right e-Visa option30 days single entry (50 €), 30 days multiple entry (75 €) or 90 days multiple entry (100 €) depending on the nature and duration of the stay.
  • Submit the application at least 7 days before departureApplications can be submitted up to 3 days before, but applying early avoids any stress in case of additional verification.
  • Register on the Ariane platform (for French nationals)This expatriate register allows the French Consulate to locate its nationals in case of emergency or force majeure.
  • Check the travel advice from the Ministry of Foreign AffairsPolitical, security and health situation in Benin — regularly updated information available on diplomatie.gouv.fr for French nationals.
  • Prepare documents for minor childrenIndividual passport, named e-Visa, copy of identity card, family record book or birth certificate, flight tickets.
  • Consider travel insuranceNot mandatory for the Benin e-Visa, but strongly recommended to cover medical costs, cancellations and unforeseen events.
  • Print the e-Visa if necessarySome entry points may require a paper document. Printing the e-Visa does not change the fee.

For French travellers, the website Diplomatie.gouv.fr provides regularly updated sections on Benin: Latest news, Security, Entry/Stay, Health, Useful info, Business travel. It is strongly advised to consult these before every departure, regardless of how frequently you travel to the country.

The Ariane platform, operated by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, allows French nationals to register their presence in Benin. In the event of a crisis, evacuation or force majeure, this registration facilitates repatriation operations organised by the French State. Registration is free, voluntary, and takes only a few minutes.

Key takeaways on the Benin e-Visa

Benin has built a simple, accessible and fully digital e-Visa system. Three options meet almost all needs: short tourist stay (30 days, single entry), recurring travel (30 days, multiple entry) or extended or professional stay (90 days, multiple entry). Consular fees are paid online, no return ticket is required, and the process can be started from any country, at any time. The one absolute rule to follow: plan ahead. With a minimum 7-day buffer before departure, and by ensuring every piece of information entered is accurate before confirming — impossible to correct afterwards — your trip to Benin can be prepared with complete peace of mind.
