How long does it take to obtain an ETA to travel to Kenya?

As of January 1, 2024, an electronic visa is no longer required to travel to Kenya. The Kenyan authorities no longer issue visas for Kenya. Only available online, the ETA takes over, allowing most nationalities to enter Kenya from all points of entry (including Nairobi Jomo-Kenyatta and Moi Mombasa International Airports ) for a fixed period of up to 90 days.

ETA Kenya: validity limited to 90 days

The electronic travel authorization for Kenya allows tourists and business travellers to stay for a maximum duration of 90 days. Its maximum validity is 3 months and cannot be modified.

This document is valid for a single entry. You can only enter Kenya once with this document. The Kenyan authorities do not issue multiple-entry ETAs. If you wish to cross the border, you will have to leave Kenyan territory. However, you will not be able to return without first applying for a new ETA.

The period of validity only begins when you arrive in Kenya, and not when the ETA is issued, as was previously the case with visas. This means that if you receive your ETA a week before your actual arrival in Kenya, these days will not be deducted from the total period of validity for your stay in Kenya.

What precautions should I take to make the most of the validity period of my ETA?

To avoid any unpleasant surprises and prepare for your stay in Kenya, you need to make sure that all your documents are valid, especially your passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the time you enter Kenya. If your passport is valid for less than 6 months, you will not be able to stay in Kenya.

Can I extend the validity of my ETA for Kenya?

An ETA cannot be extended on site, whatever the reason for your stay, but you can approach the local authorities to extend your stay by applying for special authorization.
