Kuwait suspends e-Visa system indefinitely

Kuwait halts its electronic visa service with immediate effect, leaving travelers scrambling as the country undergoes system upgrades and reverts to on-arrival visas for 53 eligible nationalities.

Kuwait has abruptly paused its electronic visa system, leaving seasoned globetrotters—accustomed to arranging trips with a single click—scrambling. The online visa convenience is on hold, leaving travelers to rely on traditional entry stamps instead.

System upgrades leave travellers in limbo

The Kuwaiti government has shut down its e-Visa portal, citing a system overhaul to improve performance. Though the evisa.moi.gov.kw site is currently offline, the country’s borders remain open—but with a twist. The hiatus remains open-ended as officials work to modernise the digital platform and restore service fit for 21st-century travel.

On-arrival visa offers lifeline to 53 nationalities

Good news for travellers from 53 countries, including France, Canada and the United States: since 2021, an on-arrival visa remains an option. Eligible nationalities include:
Germany, Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bhutan, Brunei, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Cyprus, South Korea, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Georgia, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Laos, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, United Kingdom, San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden, Czech Republic, Turkey, Ukraine, Vatican and USA.

Passengers from these countries can still land at Kuwait International Airport and secure their entry permit on site. This stopgap ensures travellers won’t be left stranded at the border.

Know before you go: the on-arrival visa checklist

The on-arrival route isn’t a free-for-all—preparation is key. Ensure you meet these entry essentials:

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date (build in extra lead time);

  • A return or onward ticket (proof you won’t overstay); and

  • KWD 3 in cash for visa fees (€8.4).

Don’t forget to bring proof of accommodation—you’ll be asked for it at the visa counter.
