Why a sworn translation

One badly translated document, and your whole file gets rejected

As soon as an official document written in a foreign language has to be submitted to a French administration, or a French document has to be produced abroad, a plain translation no longer cuts it. Prefectures, consulates, universities, courts and the OFII require a sworn translation: signed, dated and stamped by an expert translator listed by a Court of Appeal, with a ne varietur registration number that ties the translation to the original. It is that seal, and only that seal, that gives the document its legal force. Without it, a translation that is flawless in substance remains a mere sheet of paper with no administrative standing.

The trouble is that this market is slow, opaque and expensive. You have to track down the right expert for the right language, wait for a quote, compare rates that vary threefold, sometimes hang on for a week or two without ever knowing whether the result will be accepted. One mistake in transcribing a name, a flipped date, an approximate place of birth or a missing stamp, and the desk rejects the file: you start over, pay a second time, book another appointment. Yet the consular slot, the Campus France deadline or the residence-permit renewal cut-off does not wait. The real cost of a failed translation is not measured in euros, but in lost weeks and collapsing procedures.

Lingoris industrialises what this market does badly. You upload your document, a firm quote appears instantly, and an expert translator sworn before a Court of Appeal takes the work in hand. Every translation then goes through a tandem dual review before delivery: a second expert re-reads the entire text, checking every proper noun, every date and every amount. The result reaches you as an electronically signed PDF within 24 business hours, archived for 24 months in your account, with the hand-signed paper original available on request. If we miss the deadline for a reason on our end, the service is fully refunded, no questions asked. And if a desk still contests the translation, a revision is offered for 60 days to bring it into compliance.

  • Experts sworn before the Courts of Appeal of Paris, Lyon, Versailles, Aix and Montpellier
  • Translation certified true to the original, with direct legal force in France
  • Not to be confused with a plain translation, which has no official value

The Lingoris method

Four guarantees that make the difference

From the legal force of the document to its acceptance by administrations, every step is built so that a file passes on the first try.

01

Genuine legal force

Every translation is produced by an expert translator listed by a French Court of Appeal, the only professional authorised to issue an official, enforceable translation. The document carries their handwritten signature, their stamp and a ne varietur number that ties it inseparably to the original you entrusted to us.

  • Experts sworn before the Courts of Appeal of Paris, Lyon, Versailles, Aix and Montpellier
  • Translation certified true to the original, with direct legal force in France
  • Not to be confused with a plain translation, which has no official value
  • Ne varietur mention and expert's stamp recognised by administrations
02

Dual review in tandem

No translation leaves with a single pair of eyes. A second expert translator re-reads the entire document before delivery, which cuts errors by 98 % compared with a translation reviewed only by its own author. It is precisely those residual errors, a figure, an accent, a transcription, that get a file rejected at the desk.

  • One translator produces, a reviewer checks every figure and every name
  • Verification of proper-noun and date transcription from the source alphabet
  • -98 % errors vs a plain translation with no cross-review
  • Free revision for 60 days if a desk contests the translation
03

24h turnaround, guaranteed or refunded

  • 24 business hours guaranteed (Monday-Saturday, 9 AM-7 PM excluding public holidays)
  • Automatic refund, no justification needed, if we miss the deadline on our end
  • 6h express mode available 7 days a week (9 AM-8 PM), €19 per page surcharge

Without a sworn translation

What blocks a file, and costs you weeks

The four situations that come up most often when a translation is not sworn, or is poorly done.

Plain translation rejected

A free translation, done by a bilingual relative, a non-sworn agency or an online tool, has no official value. The desk rejects it outright, demands a sworn version, and you are back to square one while the clock on your deadlines keeps ticking.

Tight consular deadlines

A prefecture appointment, a Campus France deadline or an embassy slot won after weeks of waiting will not move. A translation that takes two weeks makes you miss the appointment, and the next one is sometimes months away.

Errors on names and dates

A first name mis-transcribed from an Arabic, Cyrillic or Chinese alphabet, a date flipped between the US and European format, an approximate place of birth: each is grounds for rejection that forces you to start again, and casts doubt over the whole file.

Document not accepted abroad

A French document translated without a sworn stamp, or without an apostille when the country requires it, and the UK Home Office, the US USCIS or Canada's IRCC rejects the file on the other side of the world, after you have already paid visa fees and booked travel.

Who it's for

When a sworn translation becomes essential

Four major use cases where an official translation determines whether your file is accepted.

01

Immigration & visas

Prefecture, OFII, consulate and embassy files: passport, long-stay visa, residence permit, family reunification, naturalisation. Every foreign civil-status document must be submitted in sworn translation to be processed.

02

Studies abroad

Campus France, international universities, diploma equivalence, transcripts and certificates of completion to translate into the host language, within the tight deadlines of application rounds.

03

Career mobility

Diploma recognition, professional Order registration, EU mobility, work certificates and international contracts that require an official, enforceable version.

04

Personal life

International marriage, adoption, inheritance, civil status changes, documents for lawyers and notaries: sensitive situations where the slightest inaccuracy can block a procedure.

Confidentiality

Your official documents, treated as such

A birth certificate, a court ruling or a diploma are sensitive personal data. Lingoris protects them end to end, from upload to delivery, in an environment hosted in the European Union and compliant with the GDPR.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sworn translation, exactly?+

It is a translation signed, dated and stamped by an expert translator listed by a French Court of Appeal, bearing a ne varietur mention that ties it to the original and a registration number. This status of judicial expert makes the translator personally accountable for the faithfulness of the translation: that is what gives it direct legal force in France and gets it recognised by most foreign administrations. Not to be confused with a plain translation, done by a bilingual relative, a non-sworn agency or an online tool, which has no official value and will be systematically refused at the desk, however good the text may be.

What is the turnaround?+

The standard turnaround is 24 business hours (Monday-Saturday, 9 AM-7 PM excluding French public holidays), with a real average delivery around 19h, so most documents come back the same or the next working day. If we exceed 24h for a reason on our end, the service is fully refunded, with no justification required: the guarantee is on us, not on you. For emergencies, a 6h express mode is available 7 days a week (9 AM-8 PM), for a surcharge of €19 per page, which is often what saves a consular appointment booked at the last minute.

How much does it cost?+

The public rate is set at 1 page = 250 words maximum. English: €29. Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese: €34. Arabic, Turkish, Russian and Chinese: €39. Rare languages: from €49. Options are added to the base price: apostille +€25, paper original +€9, additional copy +€5. A 10 % discount applies from 3 documents, which is useful when a whole family file or a full academic record has to be translated at once. The exact quote appears before any payment, with no hidden fees and no estimate that drifts upward later.

How does ordering work?+

In four steps: 1) you upload your documents, by phone photo or PDF scan; 2) an instant, firm quote appears, options included; 3) you pay online via Stripe with secure checkout; 4) a tandem takes over, an expert translator produces the translation and a second re-reads the entire document before the signed PDF is delivered by email within 24h, archived for 24 months. You have no travelling to plan, no mail to send, no follow-up to chase: everything happens online, from dropping off the document to receiving the signed translation, and you track progress from your account.

Which languages are covered?+

Nine languages are available with direct public pricing: English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Turkish, Russian and Chinese. Beyond those, more than 150 additional languages are available on quote: European, Asian and African languages, dialects and variants such as Urdu, Hindi, Swahili, Hebrew or Haitian Creole. For each language we call on an expert translator sworn in that exact pair, because the authorisation covers a given language combination rather than the translator in general. If your language is not in the public rate, the instant quote gives you the price in seconds, with no extra steps on your side.

Will the document be accepted everywhere?+

Yes for French administrations: prefectures, consulates, universities, courts, town halls, notaries and the OFII. And for most foreign administrations: UK Home Office, USCIS in the United States, IRCC in Canada, Campus France abroad. The translation carries the signature and stamp of an expert translator listed by a Court of Appeal, which gives it its official value. If a desk still contests the translation, a revision is offered free of charge for 60 days to bring it into compliance, with no new invoice. For countries that require an apostille or consular legalisation, these extra steps are offered as options so the document is recognised without reservation.

What about apostille and legalisation?+

The apostille is a formality set out by the Hague Convention that authenticates the signature of the authority or translator on a document intended for use abroad. It is required for countries such as the United States, Canada, China, Brazil or Morocco: it is available as an option at +€25. For countries outside the Hague Convention, such as Cuba, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon or Syria, a heavier consular legalisation is needed, offered as an option at +€85. In every other case, the sworn translation alone already has legal force in France and most countries. If you are unsure what your destination requires, state the country at the time of ordering and we point you to the right formality.

In what formats is the translation delivered, and are my documents confidential?+

By default, the translation is delivered as an electronically signed PDF, by email, with 24-month archive access in your account, so you can download it again or re-submit it to an administration at any time during that period. You can also receive the hand-signed paper original by tracked mail (+€9), which some desks still prefer, and order an additional paper copy (+€5). On confidentiality: every exchange is protected by TLS 1.3 encryption, your files are hosted within the European Union on GDPR-compliant infrastructure, and the source documents you entrust to us are automatically deleted 90 days after delivery, so nothing sensitive lingers once your translation is in hand.
