Mali suspends visa issuance to French citizens by reciprocity

Mali announced on Thursday, 10 August that it would suspend the issuance of visas to French nationals through its consular services. The decision follows France’s recent classification of the entire Malian territory as a red zone, formally discouraging travel to the country.

Tensions escalate between the two countries

The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims the move upholds the principle of reciprocity and "regrets the unilateral French measure." However, France’s Quai d’Orsay has yet to confirm any suspension of visa issuance for Malian citizens. The growing strain between the two nations stems from kidnapping risks and broader insecurity in Mali, alongside the regional spread of jihadist activity.

France’s red-zone classification

Previously, Mali’s capital was classified as an orange zone—where travel was discouraged except for essential reasons—while the rest of the country was already a red zone. France’s expansion of the red-zone designation to include all of Mali has been met with surprise by Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The reciprocal suspension of visa issuance by consular services in Bamako and Paris reflects a deterioration in bilateral and regional relations between France and Mali. This development could threaten ongoing joint efforts in security, particularly in combating jihadist terrorism in the region.
