Oman seizes World Cup opportunity to ease entry for visitors

Oman is leveraging the World Cup by waiving visa requirements for spectators with match tickets, aiming to boost tourism and offering dual-country travel to Qatar and Oman.

Like Qatar, the World Cup host nation, Oman is also tapping into the sporting event to its advantage. The sultanate has decided to ease entry rules for World Cup spectators to pump-prime its tourism sector.

World Cup tickets replace Oman visa stamp

According to FIFA, the global football governing body, over 23.5 million match tickets have already been sold ahead of the tournament, with several more million expected to go before the event begins. For Oman, this represents a golden opportunity it would be remiss to overlook.

The sultanate is rolling out the welcome mat for World Cup attendees by allowing anyone with a match ticket to enter Oman visa-free. This showstopper of a move opens the door for visitors not just to Qatar, but also to two destinations at once.

Oman Airports, which manages all of Oman’s civil airports, has confirmed it will implement the government’s decision and even announced plans for discounted flights between Muscat, Oman’s capital, and Doha, capital of Qatar.

World Cup-driven tourism surge: Oman’s main goal

The prime motivation behind Oman’s hospitality push is to revive its travel and tourism industry with a World Cup boost.

Major sporting events like the World Cup draw vast crowds—and with them, eager spenders looking to make the most of their time. Oman hopes to match, if not exceed, what’s on offer in Qatar for those heading to matches.

Teamwork is at the heart of this initiative: Oman’s tourism board (OMRAN), Oman Airports, and government authorities have partnered with Oman Air to offer spectators alluring packages—hotel stays and charter flights to Qatar fixtures at knockdown prices.

Spectators won’t face gruelling journeys to reach Qatar; direct flights between Doha and Muscat are just 90 minutes aloft.

One World Cup ticket equals Oman entry—is it open to everyone?

Normally, visitors to Oman must secure a visa in advance, with options for:

  • a single-entry tourist visa valid for 10 days

  • a single-entry tourist visa valid for 30 days

  • and a multiple-entry tourist visa valid for 365 days.

The sultanate’s visa-free entry, however, runs from 20 November—when the World Cup kicks off—through 18 December, when it concludes. This means even non-football fans can seize the chance to explore Oman’s coastal delights and cultural riches without visa hassles. With this exceptional measure, Oman is positioning itself as the ideal winter escape destination.
