Qatar Extends Visas Free for Stranded Travelers Amid Airspace Closure

Qatar waives visa extension fees and covers extra hotel costs for stranded travelers after a sudden airspace closure sparked regional disruption, easing legal and financial burdens.

In response to the indefinite closure of its airspace since 28 February due to escalating Middle East tensions, Qatar has announced the automatic one-month extension of all entry visas. No administrative steps are required from travelers. The state has also activated measures to cover accommodation costs for those affected.

As one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, the sudden closure of Qatar’s airspace has left thousands of international passengers—both in transit and at the end of their stays—grounded, unable to continue their journeys.

Automatic Visa Extension

To prevent tourists and business travelers from overstaying due to flight cancellations, authorities have introduced a flexible temporary visa extension. Four key points of the scheme:

  • No need to visit an immigration office or complete an online form—electronic systems have been updated to apply the extension automatically.

  • No fees will be charged, unlike standard extensions.

  • The extension runs for one month from 28 February 2026; authorities have indicated a further extension if the crisis persists.

  • All visa types are covered, including tourist, business, family visit, and visas on arrival.

Important note: Automatic extension does not apply if your visa was already expired before 28 February 2026. In such cases, you must first pay the applicable overstay fine for the period prior to that date.

What You Can Do With Your Qatar Airways Tickets

With Hamad International Airport (Doha) closed, national carrier Qatar Airways has suspended all departures and arrivals until further notice. If your ticket was scheduled between 28 February and 10 March 2026, you may:
choose a free rebooking (up to 14 days after your original travel date)
opt for a full refund of your ticket.

Use the airline’s mobile app or official website to adjust your itinerary. Call centers are overwhelmed, so the carrier asks travelers to contact them only if the original flight is within 48 hours.

State Steps in to Pay for Extra Hotel Nights

The biggest worry for stranded travelers is the cost of unplanned, extended stays. To ease this, the Qatari government—through Qatar Tourism—has pledged to cover additional accommodation costs. Hotels have been instructed to extend stays for guests grounded by the airspace crisis; the government will directly settle the difference. Similar arrangements have been observed recently in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Our agency’s recommendations, consistent with official guidance:

  • Remain indoors and avoid all non-essential travel until authorities announce an official reopening of civil aviation.

  • Do not go to the airport—wait for a formal resumption notice before attempting to reach Hamad International Airport.

  • Keep digital proof: Save screenshots of your flight cancellation. Even if Qatar has adjusted your legal status, such documentation may be required later when seeking emergency extensions in transit countries (e.g., within the Schengen Area, where return-visa issues may arise).
