No, the Schengen Tourist Visa Is Not Banned for Travelers Under 30

A TikTok rumor claiming the Schengen visa now requires applicants to be over 30 caused widespread concern in Algeria—before the creator clarified it was a joke. Here’s what you need to know.

In an era when information spreads faster than ever, misinformation can go viral—often with serious consequences. A recent incident in Algeria demonstrated just how quickly false claims can take off.

A TikTok video posted by a user known as @yacine.bylka made headlines when it claimed a new European law required all Schengen tourist visa applicants to be over 30. According to the video, those under 30 would automatically have their applications rejected.

The claim circulated rapidly on social media, amassing over 7,000 shares and 15,000 likes. It sparked anxiety especially among young Algerians—including students planning to study in Europe, particularly France.

The next day, however, the TikTok creator released a follow-up video admitting the announcement was not true. He clarified it had been a joke intended to respond to a comment about the supposed visa ban for under-30s.

The incident highlights just how quickly false information—even when later corrected—can cause confusion and distress. It underscores the critical need for fact-checking in the digital age. While social media has democratized access to information, it has also provided fertile ground for disinformation. And while some false claims may seem harmless, they can have real-world consequences.

Visa applicants often cite the complexity and lack of transparency in the Schengen visa process as major frustrations. Concerns persist over high refusal rates for applicants from certain Maghreb countries. Our visa support services remain available to assist applicants.
