Syria Launches E-Visa on May 1, 2024
Syria introduces a streamlined electronic visa system on May 1, 2024, aiming to revitalize its tourism industry amid recovery from years of conflict.
Facing persistent challenges in its tourism sector, Syria has adopted a groundbreaking approach by launching an electronic visa system effective May 1, 2024. Designed to simplify entry procedures for foreign visitors and stimulate the country’s tourism industry, this initiative marks a significant step for the war-torn nation.
A modern tool for Syrian consular services
A decade of conflict has severely undermined Syria’s tourism sector. To counter this and overhaul its consular services, the country has introduced an e-visa system starting May 1, 2024. The decision follows coordinated efforts among several key institutions, including the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Communications and Technology, Syrian Telecommunications Establishment, Ministry of Interior, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates. The unified goal is to streamline the visa application process for international travelers and attract foreign investment.
The e-Visa platform: simplifying travel for visitors
The primary benefit of an electronic visa is its accessibility and the speed at which travelers can secure entry permission. Under the new online platform evisa.sy (now live), visitors can submit applications and receive travel authorization without visiting a Syrian embassy or consulate in person.
A milestone for reviving Syria’s tourism
According to Mohammad Rami Radwan Martini, Syria’s Minister of Tourism, the introduction of the e-visa represents a vital breakthrough amid the crisis gripping the nation’s tourism industry. In 2023, the sector showed encouraging signs of recovery: over 530,000 visitors were recorded between January and June 2023, a 25% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
An e-visa tailored to current constraints
With limited Syrian diplomatic representation in many countries, the evisa.sy portal addresses a critical gap by empowering foreign nationals to submit visa applications online from outside Syria. To further ease the process, Syrians residing in the country can also submit applications on behalf of foreigners through the portal anjez.gov.sy.
Exact specifications of the e-visa—such as validity, permitted stay length, number of entries, fees, or eligible nationalities—have not yet been disclosed. The Minister confirmed that approvals will be issued within 72 hours of application.
