US Visa Waiver: Israel now joins ESTA program from Nov 30
Israel joins the US Visa Waiver Program starting November 30, allowing citizens to travel visa-free with ESTA for $20. Discover the benefits, reciprocity clauses, and lasting impact on US-Israel relations.
Starting 30 November 2023, Israeli citizens will be able to travel to the United States under the ESTA Visa Waiver Program. This significant easing follows Israel’s inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Program, fostering closer ties and fueling economic and security cooperation.
A simple, quick online process
Under the new arrangements, eligible Israelis need only complete an online application via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and pay approximately US$20 to receive their travel authorization. Previously, applicants were required to submit forms in person at the US Embassy in Tel Aviv. As Visamundi reported months ago, this milestone caps years of bilateral negotiations.
State Secretary Antony Blinken hailed the move as a milestone in US-Israel relations, reinforcing the two nations’ strategic partnership.
Equal treatment for all American travelers
In exchange, Israel agreed to remove restrictions imposed on Palestinian-American citizens and to guarantee equal treatment for all US passport holders, regardless of ethnicity, skin colour or religion.
During the pilot period leading up to the agreement, roughly 100,000 Americans—including tens of thousands of Palestinians—travelled to Israel and onward to the West Bank without needing advance visas.
Key benefits for Israeli travellers
For Israeli citizens, the new Visa Waiver regime delivers measurable advantages:
Time savings: the streamlined ESTA process provides rapid authorization and eliminates embassy queues and unnecessary paperwork.
Cost savings: lower application fees and savings on travel to embassies reduce the overall cost of trips to the United States.
Peace of mind: straightforward online authorization lets Israeli passport holders plan confidently without the anxiety of visa refusals.
A recognition of deepening collaboration
The decision to admit Israel into the Visa Waiver Program stems from a reciprocal agreement and reflects an increasingly close economic, political and security partnership.
Antony Blinken underscored how the accord strengthens bilateral bonds and advances the prosperity and security of both peoples.
Joint efforts paved the way
This landmark accord is the culmination of intensive work by Israeli and American officials in both governments. Joining current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in this effort, former leaders Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid worked to meet all requirements for Visa Waiver participation.
