USA ends vaccine requirement for entry on May 11, 2023

The White House announced the end of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for U.S. entry on May 11, 2023, coinciding with the termination of the national health emergency. Non-vaccinated travelers will no longer face quarantine rules, but individual state rules may still apply.

The White House announced the end of the COVID-19 vaccine requirement for entry into the United States effective May 11, 2023.

This decision aligns with the conclusion of the national health emergency declared in January 2020. Foreign travelers will no longer be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the U.S. This vaccination mandate had been extended multiple times and remained in place until now.

The United States was among the countries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than one million deaths. The measures taken to contain the spread, including the vaccine mandate, sparked intense political debates.

Entry rules for the U.S. before May 11, 2023

Until that date, unvaccinated foreign travelers were required to quarantine for five days upon arrival and take a viral test three to five days after entering, unless they provided proof of recovery or a vaccination exemption document prior to boarding.

It remains unclear whether arriving passengers will still be strongly encouraged (though not obligated) to take a test three to five days after arrival, regardless of health status. Note: rules may vary between individual U.S. states.

In addition, the U.S. national health emergency will also expire on May 11, 2023: the federal government will no longer purchase vaccines for the population, shifting the responsibility—and cost—of vaccination, testing, and treatment to individuals or their insurance providers.
