Algeria Extends Visa-Free Entry for Dual Nationals Until 2027

Algeria has announced the extension of its visa-free entry policy for dual nationals until December 31, 2027, allowing unrestricted travel even with expired Algerian documents.

If you’re an Algerian dual national residing abroad (such as Franco-Algerians or Belgo-Algerians), the Algerian authorities have just announced that the exceptional visa-free entry policy is being extended until December 31, 2027.

What changes (and what stays the same)

Originally introduced to manage peak summer travel, these “exceptional and derogatory” measures are now valid for an additional year—and remain open-ended through 2027.

⚠️ Official deadline: December 31, 2027
This derogation allows you to enter and exit Algeria without needing to obtain a visa in advance, even if your Algerian identity documents are out of date.

Conditions for visa-free entry

To travel with peace of mind, you must fall into one of the two following categories. Note: presenting a valid foreign passport (French, Canadian, Belgian, etc.) remains a non-negotiable requirement.

Case 1: You have a Biometric National Identity Card (CNIBE)

Considered the safest route. Travel documentation required:
✅ Your valid foreign passport.
✅ Your biometric and electronic Algerian National ID card (CNIBE).

👉 Pro tip: The CNIBE is accepted even if it’s expired.

Case 2: You don’t have a CNIBE

If you don’t hold a biometric card, you may use an older passport—but under strict conditions:
✅ Your valid foreign passport.
✅ Your Algerian e-passport (biometric).

👉 Pro tip: This expired Algerian e-passport is still accepted.
❌ Caution: Older green “non-biometric” passports are typically not accepted under this provision.

Families traveling with children under 15 who do not yet have Algerian paperwork also qualify for this flexibility.

Documents to present to PAF (Border Police):

  • The child’s valid foreign passport.

  • Proof of parentage or legal relationship:

  • Family record book (livret de famille).

  • Birth certificate.

  • Household registration slip.

For legal guardians: Documents confirming guardianship status (e.g., Kafala or court order).

Heads-up: name consistency
This is a frequent stumbling block at registration desks. If the spelling of your name differs between your foreign passport and Algerian documents, prepare ahead:
Minor difference (a single letter): Bring an “attestation d’individualité” issued by the consulate.
Major difference (completely different surname): A court judgment will be required.

While this measure comes as enormous relief to the diaspora, remember it’s still temporary. Algerian consulates (Paris, Lyon, Marseille, etc.) strongly urge dual nationals not to wait until the eleventh hour (the end of 2027) to set their paperwork straight.

Use this window to start renewing your Algerian biometric passports during off-peak periods to avoid seasonal consul overload.
