Brazil Postpones Visa Requirement for Australians, Canadians and Americans until 2024

Brazil's government delays visa obligation for Australian, Canadian and US travelers until January 10, 2024, sustaining tourism and economic ties amid strategic partnerships.

The Government of Brazil has announced in a press conference that it is delaying the implementation of visa requirements for Australian, Canadian, and US citizens. The new date is set for 10 January 2024, instead of the initially planned 1 October 2023. This decision follows discussions between the governments of the countries involved and Brazilian authorities.

Designed to facilitate tourist and business travel among the countries in question, the move also aims to strengthen economic and cultural ties with these strategic partners.

Impact on tourism and international relations

The decision to postpone the visa requirement is expected to have a positive impact on Brazil’s tourism sector. Australian, Canadian, and US travelers will now benefit from the exemption to explore the country’s cultural and natural wealth without incurring visa fees or the associated bureaucratic procedures.

Moreover, the delay reflects Brazil’s clear political commitment to deepen relations with these nations. The revised timeline will allow governments and businesses across the four countries to continue developing commercial exchanges and capitalize on opportunities provided by this measure.

Conditions for visa-free entry to Brazil

To qualify for this visa exemption, Australian, Canadian, and US passport holders must meet several criteria: visitors may stay for a maximum of 90 days, non-renewable within the calendar year, and must not be inadmissible due to a criminal record or an administrative restriction.

As of 2023, visa-free tourist or business stays of up to 90 days in Brazil apply to passport holders from the following countries:

  • All European Union countries, including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, among others.

  • The United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore, among others.

  • Most Latin American countries, including Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and Colombia, among others.

  • Certain countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Travelers must present the following documents upon Brazil’s immigration control:

  • A valid passport with at least six months’ validity beyond the intended date of departure from Brazil.

  • A round-trip or onward ticket.

  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of the stay.

  • Proof of accommodation for the duration of the stay.
