Morocco-Israel Visa Exemption Talks Underway

Morocco and Israel are negotiating a visa waiver for Moroccan citizens as tourism and cultural exchanges surge following bilateral normalization.

Since 2022, there has been a marked warming of relations between Morocco and Israel, notably following Israel’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. This thaw has translated into a sharp rise in Moroccan visitors to the Jewish state.

Morocco’s Potential Visa Waiver

To further expand religious, cultural and tourism exchanges, talks are underway on lifting visa requirements for Moroccan citizens. Meir Masri, a prominent advocate of the plan, posted on social media: “It is shameful and unacceptable that a European or a Russian can enter Israel visa-free while our Moroccan brothers and sisters still need a visa.” In November 2021 the Labor-party Knesset member introduced legislation to ease Moroccan entry to Israel.

Direct Flights Boost Connectivity

Normalized ties have also enabled direct flights between the two countries, drawing more Israeli tourists to Morocco. Daniel, a Moroccan-Israeli guide, says he increasingly shuttles Israeli groups around the kingdom to explore its cultural treasures.

What Are the Benefits of This Thaw?

The deepening rapprochement brings several dividends:

  • Tourism growth: Visa exemptions and direct flights make travel easier for both populations, injecting fresh revenue into their economies.

  • Cultural exchange: Cross-visits let Moroccan and Israeli citizens discover each other’s traditions, fostering mutual appreciation.

  • Momentum for peace: The case could serve as a model for the wider region by demonstrating how former rivals can build pragmatic, peaceful relations.
