Thailand Considers 90-Day Visa Extension for Select Countries

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin explores extending tourist visas to 90 days for travelers from key markets to revive Phuket’s tourism sector amid economic recovery efforts.

Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, has committed to reviving tourism in Phuket by exploring a 90-day visa extension for citizens of select countries. He also plans to boost capacity at Phuket International Airport in anticipation of a potential surge in international arrivals during the peak season in November.

On Friday, August 25, Mr. Thavisin and members of the tourism policy committee of the Pheu Thai party, led by Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, visited Phuket to meet with locals and gather input from the private sector. Their goal was to explore ways to promote tourism in the island province.

A Move to Attract More Foreign Tourists to Thailand

By extending tourist visas to 90 days, the Thai government aims to draw more foreign visitors—especially from targeted countries. This initiative comes as the country’s tourism sector remains sluggish since the Covid-19 pandemic, which has significantly impacted Thailand’s economy, highly reliant on the industry.

Tourism accounts for approximately 20% of Thailand’s GDP and generates critical revenue for the nation. The health crisis triggered a steep decline in international tourist numbers, from nearly 40 million in 2019 to just a few hundred thousand in both 2020 and 2021.

The Economic Benefits of a 90-Day Visa Extension

Extending visas to 90 days offers several advantages for Thailand. Primarily, it would encourage longer stays, boosting local spending and supporting the economy. Furthermore, this measure could position Thailand as a top choice for leisure or business travel for tourists from targeted countries, reinforcing the country’s international standing and strengthening ties with partner nations.

The visa extension would also benefit local businesses, particularly in tourism. It would give them access to a broader, more diverse clientele while simplifying administrative procedures for travelers from affected countries.

The Likely Target Countries for the 90-Day Visa Extension

The Thai authorities have not yet revealed the complete list of countries eligible for this extension. However, it is expected that regional neighbors in Asia and Thailand’s key trade and tourism partners, such as China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, the United States, and European countries, will be prioritized.

An Announcement Expected Soon

No specific implementation date has been announced for the 90-day visa extension. However, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has assured stakeholders that he will review the proposal closely and make a swift decision given its economic and tourism implications for the country.
