Cameroon's Handball Team Excluded from Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier Due to Visa Issues

Cameroon's women's handball team missed the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier in Hungary after visa denials marred their participation—the federation blames Germany's consulate for alleged sabotage.

The Cameroon women’s handball team has been barred from the ongoing Olympic qualifying tournament in Hungary after failing to secure travel visas.

The Cameroonian Ministry of Sports took all necessary steps to ensure participation of the women’s national team in the qualifying tournament in Debrecen, Hungary (held concurrently in Spain and Germany). Despite these efforts, the visas could not be obtained.

According to Abba Oumate, President of the Cameroonian Handball Federation (Fédération Camerounaise de Handball, FECAHAND), Germany’s consulate deliberately obstructed the visa process for the Cameroonian delegation. As a result, the Cameroon women’s national handball team was forced to withdraw from the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier (TQO). The United Kingdom was subsequently named as Cameroon’s replacement.

FECAHAND Accuses German Consulate of Sabotage

In a press statement, FECAHAND’s President claimed the German consulate had "deliberately delayed and complicated the visa process for the Cameroonian delegation", alleging this act of interference was carried out in favor of the British team.

  • Several European countries have tightened visa procedures following recent terror alerts, which may have contributed to the federation’s difficulties.

  • Well-informed sources within the Ministry of Sports instead pin the blame on FECAHAND, alleging the federation—which was responsible for visa applications—received only financial support while failing to complete required administrative steps for visas for athletes and technical staff.

This exclusion ends Cameroon’s Olympic aspirations. Despite the players’ and coaches’ hard work, there are now no pathways open to future international competition unless the situation is resolved soon.

A fresh setback for Cameroon’s Lionesses

Nationals also expressed disappointment that no players received performance bonuses following the 2023 IHF Women’s World Championship. Reports indicate the Cameroonian government failed to allocate sufficient funds for tournament fees, travel, accommodation, and related expenses—raising broader questions about the Ministry of Sports’ commitment to the country’s female athletes.
