Electronic visaSince 30 April 2023, Cameroon has fully digitised its visa application process: no more submissions at an embassy or consulate are possible — everything is done online. The result is called the pre-enrolment — an official e-Visa received as a PDF, which must be printed before boarding your flight. Almost all nationalities are affected; only a handful of neighbouring countries benefit from an exemption. Whether you are travelling for tourism, business, study or any other purpose, this guide clearly sets out the eligibility rules, the step-by-step procedure and the documents you need to prepare in order to avoid any hold-ups.
01 · The essentials
Since 30 April 2023, all visa applications are made exclusively online — no in-person submission at an embassy is possible, regardless of the type of visa.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your departure date from Cameroon — a mandatory condition for all travellers without exception.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is physically checked on arrival in Cameroon for every traveller, regardless of the type of visa held.

Before 2023, obtaining a Cameroonian visa required a physical visit to an embassy or consulate, submitting a paper file, waiting an uncertain length of time and dealing with unpredictable processing timelines. The Cameroonian government put an end to this system on 30 April 2023 by launching a fully paperless pre-enrolment portal.
Since that date, all nationalities without exception — apart from neighbouring countries traditionally exempt — must go through this digital portal. The Cameroon embassy no longer processes visa applications: it systematically redirects applicants to the online portal. This shift to an all-electronic process simplifies matters in theory, but requires rigorous document preparation, as the official portal can be demanding, particularly when uploading supporting documents.
The Cameroonian e-Visa takes the form of an electronic travel authorisation in PDF format that must be printed. This document — the pre-enrolment — must be presented to the airline at check-in and then to immigration officers on arrival. A definitive visa is then stamped in your passport on the spot, in Cameroon.
The Cameroonian authorities expressly reserve the right to restrict your e-Visa to a single entry during the validity period, and to reduce the authorised length of stay below 180 days, even if you applied for a standard short stay. Likewise, the granted validity (6 or 12 months) may be reduced at their discretion. These adjustments fall within the sovereign powers of the Cameroonian immigration services and cannot be appealed at the time of arrival.
02 · Eligibility
The basic rule is straightforward: all nationalities require a visa to enter Cameroon, except nationals of the following countries, which share a land border with Cameroon:
This exemption applies for stays of up to 90 days. Beyond that, a residence permit application must be submitted to the Cameroonian immigration authorities.
For French, Belgian, Swiss, Canadian, American and the vast majority of European or worldwide nationalities, the e-Visa is compulsory, regardless of the purpose of travel. There is no partial exemption by nationality other than for the six countries listed above.
If your stopover in Cameroon is under 24 hours and you do not leave Douala or Yaoundé-Nsimalen international airport, you do not need a visa. Beyond 24 hours, a transit visa is required.
All travellers, including infants, young children and minors, are subject to the visa requirement. There is no age-based exemption: every member of the family must have their own e-Visa.
The pre-enrolment covers six categories: tourism, business (training, mission, seminar, internship, work, conference), NGO and humanitarian, studies and teaching, visiting family, and religion/evangelism.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure date from Cameroon. This requirement is checked during document upload: an application submitted with a passport expiring before this threshold will be automatically rejected.
If your passport expires less than 6 months after your planned return date, renew it before starting your e-Visa application. Passport renewal timelines can be lengthy depending on the country and time of year — this is a point to address well in advance of your trip.
03 · The procedure
The Cameroon e-Visa application process is entirely paperless. It takes place on an official online portal and follows a specific sequence. The difficulty level is rated as challenging: before even beginning to fill in the form, all required documents must be prepared and in the correct format. The official portal can also prove demanding when uploading supporting documents, due to the accepted file formats. Thorough preparation is the main factor in a successful application.
Gather all required supporting documents (see the next section) before opening the form. Carefully check your passport validity, the compliance of your yellow fever vaccination certificate, and the consistency of your travel dates with your airline tickets and hotel reservation. Any non-compliant document will result in rejection or a request for additional information from the authorities, extending processing times.
Access the Cameroonian pre-enrolment portal. Enter your personal details (civil status, contact information, nationality), your passport data, your dates of stay in Cameroon, your purpose of travel and the type of visa you are applying for (short stay or long stay). Check every field carefully: a data entry error can invalidate the application.
Upload each document into the designated fields on the platform. Comply with the file formats and sizes required by the portal — this is where the majority of difficulties reported by applicants arise. In the event of an automatic rejection, check the format (JPEG, PDF…) and file size before trying again.
Once the form is complete and documents uploaded, pay the consular fees (167 € for a short-stay e-Visa) online by credit card or other accepted payment method. A confirmation email is sent to you after the transaction.
After submission, the Cameroonian authorities process your file. The usual processing time is approximately 5 days. During peak periods or public holidays, this timeline may be longer. If your application was submitted well ahead of your departure date, your visa will be transmitted closer to that date.
When your visa is approved by the Cameroonian authorities, you receive your pre-enrolment by email in PDF format. Print this document and keep it with you throughout the trip. It will be required at check-in by the airline and presented on arrival in Cameroon.
On arrival at Douala or Yaoundé-Nsimalen airport, present your printed pre-enrolment, your passport and your yellow fever vaccination certificate to immigration officers. The definitive visa is stamped in your passport on the spot. If your arrival date has changed since you submitted your application, it is advisable to inform the agency handling your file.
It is strongly recommended to start your application at least one month before your planned arrival date. This lead time allows for any consular backlogs, public holidays and weekends when files are not processed, as well as any potential request to correct or update your documents. Never book a non-refundable flight before you have received your pre-enrolment.
04 · Required documents

The list of documents required for a Cameroon e-Visa is one of the most comprehensive in the region. Careful file preparation is critical: any missing, illegible or non-compliant document can lead to rejection or a request for additional information that significantly delays visa issuance. Below are all the supporting documents commonly required for a standard application:
Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of travel (business visa, NGO visa, study visa, etc.). The detailed list by visa type is specified on the submission platform when filling in the form.
The international yellow fever vaccination certificate is compulsory for entry into Cameroon. It is physically checked on arrival at the airport. Without this document, you may be refused entry to the country, even if you hold a valid e-Visa. The vaccination booklet must be presented on arrival to health and immigration officers.
The official Cameroonian portal imposes specific file formats for each uploaded document. This is the most commonly reported friction point: a file that is too large, in an unaccepted format or with incorrect resolution will be automatically rejected. Prepare each document in the required format before opening the form, and convert your files if necessary. In the event of rejection, check the technical specifications before resubmitting.
05 · Validity & fees
The Cameroon e-Visa comes in two versions: short stay and long stay. These two options differ in terms of the authorised length of stay and their fee. The choice between the two depends on the duration of your project in Cameroon and your purpose of travel.
It is important to distinguish between two concepts:
These durations are granted subject to the decision of the Cameroonian authorities: they may be reduced compared to the theoretical maximum, for both the length of stay and the validity or number of authorised entries.
The visa may be granted for single entry or multiple entries, at the discretion of the Cameroonian authorities. In the case of a multiple-entry visa, you may leave and return to Cameroon multiple times during the validity period, within the total authorised length of stay.
Regarding consular fees, the currently applicable rates are 167 € for a short-stay e-Visa and a higher amount for long stays (332 €). These consular fees are set by the Cameroonian authorities and may be updated. They do not include any service fees associated with processing your application.
Applicable rate — verify the current amount when submitting your application
If you wish to extend your stay beyond the authorised duration, you must contact the Cameroonian immigration authorities in person, before your current visa expires. This process cannot be carried out remotely.
If your arrival date in Cameroon changes after you have submitted your application, you must promptly notify the agency or service managing your file, so that the declared dates match your actual airline tickets.
Travel insurance is not compulsory for a short stay, but is strongly recommended. However, for a long stay, repatriation insurance is compulsory in order to obtain the visa.
The pre-enrolment must be presented at check-in. The airline checks this document before departure. It is therefore essential to have it printed and with you from the moment you check in.
06 · Before you leave
Cameroon is a major destination in Central Africa, often nicknamed "Africa in miniature" for the diversity of its landscapes: equatorial forests, savannahs, mountains, Atlantic beaches and national parks teeming with wildlife. Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West Africa, draws hikers; the Dja Faunal Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to exceptional biodiversity. The cities of Douala and Yaoundé are the two main air entry points.
Preparing a trip to Cameroon means making administrative formalities a priority, given how demanding the e-Visa process can be. Below is a checklist to help you travel with peace of mind.
The vast majority of difficulties encountered with Cameroon e-Visa applications arise before submission: missing documents, a passport with insufficient validity, files in a format not accepted by the portal, or inconsistencies between the declared dates and the airline tickets. These errors result either in automatic rejection or in a request for additional information from the authorities, which extends processing times. The solution: prepare each document carefully before opening the form, not during the data entry process.
Since 30 April 2023, Cameroon has simplified access to its territory by going fully digital: no more embassies, no more paper files. The pre-enrolment (PDF e-Visa) is received by email and presented at check-in. The process is open to almost all nationalities, but requires thorough document preparation: passport valid for 6 months, compulsory yellow fever vaccination booklet, files compliant with the portal's technical requirements. The usual processing time is approximately 5 days, but it is prudent to allow at least one month. For a long stay (360 days), repatriation insurance is compulsory. The Cameroonian authorities reserve the right to modify the authorised length of stay or the number of entries granted — it is therefore advisable not to leave things to the last minute.
