Nicknamed the "gateway to West Africa", Ghana cultivates a hospitality that has become legendary — the famous Akwaaba, "welcome" — at the crossroads of a dense history, Atlantic coastlines and elephant-filled savannahs. Long synonymous with queues at the embassy, entering the country has moved into the digital age: since 25 May 2026, the Ghanaian government has opened an official portal to obtain online, before departure, either an electronic visa (e-Visa) or an electronic travel authorization (ETA). Which document you need depends on your nationality — and in every case, Visamundi prepares, checks and files your application from start to finish, so all you have to think about is the trip.

01 · The essentials

e-Visa or ETA: entry is now fully online

Ghana has modernised and broadened its entry policy while keeping tight control of its borders. In practice, two travel documents now coexist, issued by the same official portal: the paid electronic visa (e-Visa), and the free electronic travel authorization (ETA), reserved for eligible African nationals. Either one is obtained before boarding; it is what allows you to fly, with actual entry confirmed on arrival by the immigration service.

These two formalities should not be confused. The e-Visa is a genuine online visa, with consular fees, that applies to most travellers — including Europeans. The ETA is a simple prior authorization, with no consular fees, designed for African Union nationals. Depending on your passport, you fall under one or the other: that is the starting point of any application.

260 USD
e-Visa (from)

Consular fees for a tourism or business e-Visa, single entry. The ETA carries no consular fees.

90 days
Length of stay

Tourism and business documents allow a stay of up to 90 days.

~96 h
Standard e-Visa time

Indicative standard processing for an e-Visa; around 72 h for an ETA. Faster options exist.

Key takeaways

To enter Ghana you need, before departure, either an e-Visa (paid, from 260 USD) or an ETA (free, for eligible African nationals), obtained online. ECOWAS citizens remain exempt from any formality. A passport valid for 6 months and a yellow fever vaccination certificate are essential. Visamundi identifies the right document for your nationality and secures every step.

02 · By nationality

e-Visa, ETA or exemption: which regime applies to you?

The rule cannot be read through a single national lens: it depends on your nationality, split into three broad cases. Identifying yours is the first thing we do with you, as it determines the document to request, the fees and the supporting papers.

The right reflex
These categories change and some press lists confuse them. Rather than guessing, tell us your nationality: we confirm the applicable regime (exemption, ETA or e-Visa) and point you to the exact procedure, with no risk of error at the boarding gate.

03 · Required documents

The papers to gather for an accepted file

The quality of the file makes all the difference: legible, consistent documents avoid requests for further information from immigration, which lengthen processing. Requirements vary by document. For the ETA they are minimal; for the tourism or business e-Visa they are more complete.

  • Biometric ID photoRecent, in colour, on a plain white background, face clear and without glasses.

  • Proof of accommodationHotel booking covering the whole stay, or an invitation letter with the host's ID.
  • Invitation letter from a host or organisation in GhanaWhere applicable, depending on your hosting situation.

"Health & Security" step of the Visamundi form: yellow fever vaccination consent and security questions
In the Visamundi journey, the health & security step clearly flags the mandatory yellow fever vaccination.

One requirement outranks all others: yellow fever vaccination. The international certificate does not have to be attached to the application, but it will be demanded as soon as you arrive in Ghana, even before the immigration desk. It is a non-negotiable condition of entry.

For the ETA, the file is lighter: a passport valid at least 6 months beyond departure and a recent ID photo are enough. Here too, the yellow fever certificate is required on arrival.

Yellow fever: a condition of entry, not an option

Without an international vaccination booklet (the "yellow card") proving yellow fever vaccination, entry may be refused, or the vaccination imposed on the spot at your expense. Plan ahead: the vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before travel to be valid. Anti-malarial treatment is also strongly advised.

04 · Timing & lead time

When to start your application

≈ 96 h
Standard processing

Indicative time for an e-Visa (around 72 h for an ETA), once the complete file is submitted. Faster priority and express options also exist.

  1. D−15
    The right time to start

We recommend starting the application around fifteen days before departure, to calmly absorb any document to complete.

  2. D−3
    Minimum lead time

The application must be submitted at least three days before the planned arrival date in Ghana.

  3. D-Day
    Check on arrival

On landing, the immigration service validates entry and requires the yellow fever certificate.

The Visamundi support
Because an incomplete file can trigger a request for further information — and therefore delay — we check every document up front and follow your application through to issuance. You leave with the assurance of a compliant file, and no race against the clock at the airport.

05 · The procedure

Your application, filed by Visamundi

No need to get lost in the government portal: you entrust your application to Visamundi, and we handle the official data entry, the payment of consular fees and the follow-up. Your role is limited to gathering your documents and confirming the information. Here is the journey, step by step.

  1. 1
You tell us your nationality and purpose

We confirm the right document (ECOWAS exemption, free ETA or e-Visa) as well as the travel purpose: tourism, business, visit, transit or medical.

  2. 2
    You gather your documents

Passport, photo and, for the e-Visa, flight itinerary, proof of accommodation and invitation letter. We send you a clear, personalised list.

  3. 3
We check and complete the file

Each document is verified — legibility, validity, consistency — before any submission, to rule out the risk of rejection or further requests.

  4. 4
We enter and pay for you

We complete the official form and settle the consular fees. You never have to handle the government platform.

  5. 5
    We follow through to issuance

We monitor progress and send you your e-Visa or ETA as soon as it is issued, ready to print for the airport.

"Travel Details" step of the Visamundi form for Ghana: purpose of visit, port of entry and dates
The Visamundi journey guides every field — purpose, port of entry, dates — with no administrative jargon.

Our form gathers, in a guided way pre-filled from your verified account, the information the authorities expect: purpose of visit, port of entry (Accra and the other international airports), dates and accommodation. Every field is explained, every constraint flagged — such as the minimum three-day lead time before arrival.

The result: you never face the intricacies of the official portal directly. You confirm clear information, and we turn it into a compliant file filed in the right place.

06 · On the ground

Ghana, West Africa in miniature

Once the formality is settled, the discovery begins. Ghana offers a mosaic of vibrant cities, history-laden coasts and preserved nature. Here are the stops that recur most often in our travellers' itineraries.

Accra, the city of contrasts

Modernity and tradition meet around Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah mausoleum and the bustling Makola market.

Cape Coast & Elmina, a duty of memory

On the coast, UNESCO World Heritage forts offer a moving testimony to the history of the transatlantic slave trade.

Kakum National Park

In the southern rainforest, the "Canopy Walkway" — suspended bridges over 30 metres high — reveals the canopy and its biodiversity.

Mole National Park

In the northern savannah lies Ghana's safari paradise: African elephants, baboons and antelopes are easily spotted.

Kumasi, the Ashanti heartland

The former capital of the Ashanti empire is home to the Manhyia Palace, the Kejetia market and the art of Kente weaving.

07 · Practical tips

Travel with peace of mind

Best time to go

The climate is tropical; the dry season, from November to March, is the best time to travel and avoid heavy rains.

Currency

The currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). Cards are accepted in Accra's hotels and large restaurants, but keep cash for markets and excursions.

Language

English is the official language. A few words of Twi will be much appreciated by the people you meet.

Health & safety

Ghana is one of the safest countries in the region. Yellow fever is mandatory, anti-malarial advised, and favour sealed bottled water.

Travel insurance
Not required to obtain the document, travel insurance remains strongly advised: overseas medical expenses, medical repatriation and lost luggage. We recommend a trusted partner.
