Ghana to Finally Offer Visa-Free Entry for All Africans from May 25, 2026

President John Mahama pledges Ghana will open borders to all African passport holders on Africa Day 2026 via a new free e-visa system. Is the promise finally set to become reality?

Ghanaian President John Mahama has confirmed the country will open its borders to all African passport holders effective May 25, 2026—the same day as Africa Day. This latest declaration follows multiple previous promises.

What Was Announced

During a state visit by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on April 2, 2026, Ghana’s president stated:

"On May 25, 2026, Africa Day, Ghana will adopt a visa-free regime for all Africans. African travelers to Ghana will receive their visas online, free of charge."

— John Mahama, President of Ghana

Under the plan, all African nationals will be eligible for a free e-visa, issued digitally with no consular fees.

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa described the move as ‘transformative’ on X (now referred to as ‘X’), saying it would ‘boost tourism, ease cross-border movement, and deepen intra-African trade.’

A Recurring Promise

While this announcement marks another chapter in a recurring pledge:

  • 2024: The Akufo-Addo administration first floated the idea of opening Ghana’s borders to Africans.

  • January 2025: In his final State of the Nation address, outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo confirmed a January 1, 2025 implementation date as a ‘logical step after the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)’.

  • April 2026: Newly elected President Mahama revived the initiative with a symbolic launch date and a concrete pathway: the free e-visa system.

The latest version is distinct because a dedicated e-visa platform has been announced—suggesting technical infrastructure may finally be in place. Should it launch as scheduled, Ghana would join an elite group of African nations offering full visa-free entry to all continental travelers—including Rwanda, Seychelles, Gambia, and Benin.

Before this announcement, Ghana already exempted citizens from 26 African countries from visa requirements and ranked fifth on the continent for visa openness. The new policy aligns with Accra’s ambitions to become a pan-African hub, leveraging its panafrican roots and the success of the ‘Year of Return’ campaign launched in 2019, which drew hundreds of thousands of diaspora visitors.

The country has also brokered 23 visa-waiver agreements since 2025, expanding mobility for Ghanaian citizens globally. During the same April visit, Ghana and Zimbabwe signed 10 cooperation agreements, including a new tourism link between Victoria Falls and Cape Coast Castle.

Key Questions Remain:

  • Duration of stay: No official details given.

  • Eligibility criteria: Beyond possessing an African passport.

  • Effective launch date of the e-visa platform: To be confirmed.

  • Whether implementation will truly begin on May 25, given a history of postponements.

If fully enacted, the policy would allow African travelers to obtain a free online visa for Ghana without consular processing. We will update this report as soon as Ghanaian authorities release operational details.
