How we compare five different scales

Five sources, five scales

The United States publishes four levels, Canada four, France four colour zones, the United Kingdom wording without numbers and Germany three categories. None of these scales was designed to be compared with the others.

One shared scale from 1 to 4

Each advisory is mapped onto four levels: normal precautions, increased caution, reconsider travel, do not travel. When a ministry splits a country into zones, the level of the dominant zone is kept.

1 : Normal precautions, 2 : Increased caution, 3 : Reconsider travel, 4 : Do not travel

NormalDo not travel

Average level and consensus

The level shown is the rounded average of the ministries that publish one. A country never rates itself, so France appears in only four advisories. The “consensus” mark means at least four ministries place the destination at level 3 or above.

Updated every day

The five official sites are re-read every morning. An advisory is flagged as changed only when its level or its content changes, not when the publication date alone moves.

The one-sentence summary

The per-country summary is generated from the official advisories and reviewed by the team. It explains the level, it does not replace it: each ministry's full advice is one click away.

Visamundi is a private entry-formalities agency with no ties to ministries, embassies or consulates. These levels are those of the five governments cited, reproduced unchanged. When deciding whether to travel, your own foreign ministry's advice remains the reference.

Frequently asked questions

Does “reconsider travel” mean I cannot go?

No. A travel advisory is not a ban, and the destination's authorities keep issuing visas and travel authorisations. However, most travel insurance policies exclude areas under a do-not-travel advice from the ministry of your country of residence: check your policy before leaving.

Why do the ministries disagree?

Each ministry assesses the risk for its own nationals, with its own diplomatic sources and its own caution. A country can be under increased caution for Canada and reconsider travel for France without either being wrong: the comparison exists precisely to show those gaps.

What is the difference between “increased caution” and “reconsider travel”?

Increased caution asks you to stay informed and adapt your behaviour; the trip remains ordinary. Reconsider travel means the ministry advises against tourism; only trips you cannot postpone are considered.

Does my travel insurance cover a destination under advisory?

Often not, or only partly. Policies usually refer to the advice of the ministry of the country where the policy was bought, not to an average. Re-read the exclusion clause and, if in doubt, ask the insurer for written confirmation.

See our travel insurance
Do these levels change often?

Most countries stay at the same level for months. Changes follow specific events: a contested election, a natural disaster, a security deterioration. The “last 30 days” section at the top of the page lists the destinations concerned.

Does Visamundi issue this advice?

No. Visamundi is a private agency that handles entry formalities. The levels shown are those published by the five ministries cited, reproduced unchanged; only the per-country summary is written by us, from those advisories.
