1 option for Australia

Choose the visa that fits your trip. Fully online process, real-time tracking.

Australia is one of the rare destinations that has replaced the traditional visa with an electronic travel authorisation for certain nationalities. For citizens of 33 countries — including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Ireland — the eVisitor (Subclass 651) is the mandatory requirement before departure. Everything is handled online: no trip to the embassy, no postal submission. The process is straightforward in principle, but the form can be lengthy and technical: it is best to apply in advance and ensure every piece of information entered is rigorously accurate.

01 · The essentials

The Australian eVisitor: an authorisation, not a traditional visa

100% online

The authorisation application is completed entirely on the internet: no trip to the embassy, no postal submission required.

Passport: 6 months

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date in Australia and have a minimum of 2 blank pages.

Complexity: moderate

The process is accessible online, but the form is known for its length and technical nature: it is best to apply in advance.

eVisitor Australia - electronic travel authorisation
The Australian eVisitor is issued as an official PDF document.

The eVisitor is an electronic travel authorisation (also referred to as an ETA — Electronic Travel Authority). It is not a traditional visa affixed to the passport, but a digital document linked to your passport in Australian systems. In practice, at the time of boarding, the airline checks that your passport is associated with a valid authorisation: without this, you will not be allowed to board.

Once the authorisation is approved by the Australian authorities, you receive an official PDF document by email. This document should be printed and kept carefully to present at boarding and upon arrival in Australia. If you lose it before your trip, a copy can be obtained by email.

Please note: you must be outside Australian territory at the time you submit your application and at the time you receive your authorisation. Any application submitted from within Australia will be refused.

Good to know
The eVisitor and the Australian ETA are two distinct electronic authorisations. The eVisitor (Subclass 651) is free of consular fees and reserved for nationals of 33 specific European and Asian countries. The ETA (Subclass 601) is available to a broader range of nationalities but is subject to processing fees. If you are a national of a country eligible for the eVisitor, this is the authorisation that applies to you.

02 · Eligibility

Who can obtain an eVisitor for Australia?

The Australian eVisitor is reserved for nationals of 33 specific nationalities. These travellers must present an electronic travel authorisation for any tourist stay, business trip, or visit to relatives of up to 90 days. The eligible nationalities are: Germany, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, South Korea, Canada, Denmark, Spain, the United States, France, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, San Marino, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the Vatican.

If your nationality is not on this list, or if your stay in Australia exceeds 90 days, you will need to apply for a different type of visa: the Visitor Visa for expatriates and nationalities not eligible for the eVisitor, the Student Visa for studies of 3 months to 5 years, or the Working Holiday Visa for foreign nationals aged 18 to 35 wishing to work and travel in Australia for a period of one year. For these applications, contact the Australian Embassy in your country of residence or consult the official Australian government website.

Passport required

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Australia. It must have at least 2 blank pages available. A passport expiring shortly after your arrival may result in refusal at boarding.

Accepted purposes

The eVisitor is valid for tourism (holidays, visits to relatives, exploring the country) and for business travel (meetings, conferences, commercial negotiations, trade fairs). It does not permit working or studying in Australia.

Minors included

Minor children also need their own eVisitor if they are nationals of an eligible country. They cannot be included in a parent's or legal guardian's application. Each traveller, regardless of age, must have their own authorisation.

No work permitted

The eVisitor Business does not allow paid employment in Australia. It only authorises professional travel (meetings, conferences, etc.). To work legally in Australia, a specific work visa is required.

Check-in verification
Contrary to what one might expect, the eVisitor is not obtained upon arrival in Australia. The airline is required to verify your travel authorisation before boarding. Without a valid eVisitor, you will not be allowed to board the aircraft, regardless of your eligible nationality. Apply in advance and do not leave it to the last minute.

03 · The procedure

How to obtain your Australian eVisitor, step by step

With an entirely paperless process, the Australian eVisitor can be obtained in a simple and fast manner. Using the online form, you can submit your application in a few minutes from home, without visiting the Australian embassy. The official document is then sent to you by email in PDF format. The process is 100% online, from application to receipt of the authorisation.

It is important to note that Australian procedures can take longer than expected, particularly due to a detailed form requiring extensive information about your identity, personal situation, and travel details. Take the time to gather all the necessary elements before you begin filling in the form to avoid any interruptions or errors.

  1. 1
    Online form

You complete the online application form. Information about your identity, marital status, the purpose of your trip (tourism or business), and your intended dates will be required. The form is entirely online: no in-person visit is necessary.

  2. 2
    Submission of passport copy

Once the form is completed, you send a photocopy of your passport by email. It must be valid for the entire duration of your stay and have at least 2 blank pages.

  3. 3
    Verification and submission to authorities

Your documents are checked to ensure compliance before being submitted to the Australian authorities. This verification step eliminates the most common errors (incorrect passport number, inconsistent information) which are the main causes of refusal.

  4. 4
    Processing by the Australian authorities

The Australian authorities process your application. The usual processing time is 1 to 3 business days. In some cases, particularly if additional checks are required, this timeframe may be slightly extended.

  5. 5
    Receipt of the PDF authorisation

Once the authorisation is granted, you receive your eVisitor by email in PDF format. Print it and keep it safe: you will need to present it at boarding and potentially upon arrival in Australia.

Practical advice
We recommend submitting your application at least 2 days before your arrival in Australia, and ideally earlier if your departure date is fixed. Applications can be submitted up to 4 days before departure. If you lose your PDF authorisation before your trip, contact us to receive a free copy quickly by email.

04 · Fees

What is the cost of the Australian eVisitor?

One of the distinctive features of the Australian eVisitor is that it comes with no consular fees. The Australian authorities have chosen not to charge for this type of electronic authorisation, in a spirit of openness to nationals of eligible countries. This is a notable difference from the Australian ETA (Subclass 601), available to other nationalities and subject to processing fees.

By applying through Visamundi, you pay only service fees. These fees allow our team to carry out a full review of your file — checking information consistency and document compliance — and to handle all administrative procedures with the Australian authorities on your behalf. This preliminary check is particularly valuable for a form known for its length and technical nature.

0 €
in consular fees — the Australian eVisitor (Subclass 651) is free on the Australian administration side.

In the event of a refusal of your eVisitor application by the competent Australian authorities, the service fees related to your file will be refunded. If your eVisitor application is refused and your situation requires it, you may contact the Australian Embassy for a traditional visa application. Entry conditions are always assessed at the sole discretion of Australian customs and immigration officers upon your arrival: holding a valid eVisitor does not automatically guarantee entry into the country.

05 · Staying in Australia

Duration, validity, and conditions of your stay

The Australian eVisitor is valid for 12 months from its date of issue. During this period, it authorises you to make multiple stays in Australia, with each stay limited to a maximum of 90 consecutive days. The eVisitor is not a long-stay visa: if you wish to remain in Australia beyond 90 days, you must apply for another type of visa before your current authorisation expires.

Your travel dates do not need to be finalised at the time of application. You can enter approximate dates and adjust them later, within the maximum limit of 90 days per stay. You also do not need to have your plane tickets in hand to submit your eVisitor application.

Please note: it is impossible to extend the length of your stay once in Australia. Staying beyond the permitted period can have serious consequences: fines, deportation, and a future ban on entering Australia. If you are planning an extended stay, plan ahead and find out about the appropriate visas before your departure.

No study, no work
The Australian eVisitor is strictly reserved for tourism, visits to relatives, and business travel (meetings, conferences). It does not permit working or studying in Australia. The eVisitor Business is also not a work permit: paid activities remain prohibited. To study in Australia, a Student Visa is required. To work, you must apply for the work visa appropriate to your situation.

06 · Before you leave

Preparing well for your departure to Australia

Obtaining the eVisitor is an essential step, but it is only one part of the preparations for a successful trip to Australia. It is recommended to plan ahead on several practical points well before your departure, particularly regarding your identity documents, your health, and Australia's customs regulations, which are particularly strict.

Australia is one of the countries in the world with the most stringent phytosanitary and health regulations. Customs checks are thorough and focus in particular on food products, plants, medicines, and untreated wood or leather items. Always declare any item that may be subject to inspection to avoid complications upon arrival.

Documents and steps to prepare before departure
  • Australian eVisitor (Subclass 651)Print your PDF authorisation and keep it in your carry-on luggage. Verify that the passport number on the authorisation matches exactly the one on your physical passport.
  • Valid passportYour passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Australia and have at least 2 blank pages. Check the expiry date well before your departure.
  • Return or onward travel ticketYou will need to present proof of your intention to leave Australia at the end of your stay (return ticket or ticket to your next destination).
  • Proof of accommodationBring a hotel booking confirmation, an invitation from a relative residing in Australia, or any other proof of your place of stay.
  • Travel insuranceAlthough not mandatory for the eVisitor, travel insurance covering medical expenses is strongly recommended. Medical care in Australia can represent significant costs for foreign nationals.
  • Recommended vaccinationsThere are no mandatory vaccinations to enter Australia. However, if you have transited through risk areas (yellow fever, tuberculosis), proof of vaccination may be requested upon arrival. Consult your doctor before departure.
  • Customs declarationAustralia imposes strict regulations on the import of food products, plants, and animals. Be prepared to declare any item that may be subject to inspection upon arrival. Penalties for non-declaration are severe.
