Allowances are taken from the IATA Travel Centre — the database airlines use to check documents at boarding — then folded into our reference. Every country carries its own last-read date.

Four items, because they are the ones that hold you up

Alcohol, tobacco and currency account for most checks on arrival. Medicines appear only where a country publishes an explicit rule — roughly one in three: a missing line beats an invented one.

Thresholds, not permission

Staying under the allowance spares you a declaration, not an inspection. Above it, goods are not forbidden as such: they must be declared, and may be taxed.

These allowances are indicative and may change without notice. Visamundi is a private agency: if in doubt about a sensitive item (medicines, cash, cultural goods, animal products), check with the customs authority of your destination before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I exceed the allowance?

You must declare the excess on arrival, in the “goods to declare” channel. Exceeding the allowance is not an offence in itself; failing to declare it is, and exposes you to seizure and a fine.

Do allowances apply to minors?

Almost never for alcohol and tobacco: most countries reserve these allowances for adult travellers, sometimes from 17 or 21. Each destination's text says so where the rule differs.

Do I have to declare the cash I am carrying?

Above a country-specific threshold — often the equivalent of €10,000 — yes, on the way in as well as out. The threshold covers all bearer payment instruments, not just banknotes.

Do these rules replace visa formalities?

No. Customs allowances cover what you carry; the visa covers your right to enter. The two are checked separately on arrival. Each country's entry requirements are detailed on its destination page.
