Travel planning starts with the administrative side. Since 3 January 2026, Malawi has reintroduced visa requirements for many international travellers, including several nationalities that had previously benefited from a waiver, such as France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the United States.

The official system now sorts nationalities into three categories. The public notice of 24 February 2026, updated by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services on 6 August 2026, sets out the split: Category One — 47 countries that must obtain a visa or authorisation before travelling; Category Two — 160 countries and territories issued a visa on arrival, at all designated ports of entry and without prior authorisation; Category Three — fully visa-exempt nationalities (SADC, COMESA subject to reciprocity, a named list, plus diplomatic and service passports).

In other words, the vast majority of international travellers fall under Category Two: visa on arrival is theirs as of right, and airlines are instructed to let them board without a visa. The Government of Malawi nevertheless recommends an online application before departure through the official portal to cut waiting time at the border and secure payment.

Since the tightening of 3 January 2026, European, Swiss, British, Canadian and US nationals have lost their visa waiver. That does not mean they must obtain a visa before leaving: the notice of 24 February 2026, carried over on 6 August 2026, places them in Category Two, with visa on arrival as of right.

Category One — visa required before boarding (47 countries). The classification rests on reciprocity and security considerations. It notably includes China, India, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, Angola, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Cuba and Colombia.

Category Two — visa on arrival without prior authorisation (160 countries and territories). It covers almost all of Europe, North America, most of Latin America, Japan, South Korea, South-East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and many overseas territories.

Category Three — no visa required. It covers nationals of SADC and COMESA member states — except those imposing a visa on Malawians — plus a named list: South Africa, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Botswana, Dominica, Fiji, the Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Haiti, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Uganda, the Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Singapore, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Holders of diplomatic or service passports receive a gratis visa.
