Currency and payments

The official currency is the Malawian kwacha (MWK). The US dollar has also been accepted in high-end hotels and lodges since 2013. Credit cards are accepted in major cities (Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu) and premium tourist establishments. In rural areas and local markets, cash in kwacha is preferred.

Best time to visit

There dry season (May to October) is the optimal time to travel to Malawi: pleasant temperatures, low rainfall, passable roads and better visibility for wildlife observation in the national parks. The rainy season (November to April) makes certain areas difficult to access, but offers verdant landscapes and fewer tourists.

Security

Malawi is one of the safest and most stable countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Violent crime is rare. As everywhere, remain vigilant in Lilongwe and Blantyre (snatch thefts, pickpockets). Avoid showing signs of affluence and limit night-time travel on foot in isolated areas.

When is my e-Visa valid?

The validity of the e-Visa begins on the date the visa is issued, not on your date of entry into Malawi. It is therefore important not to apply for your visa too early, even if we can hold your file until the consular window opens. For a 3-month single-entry tourist visa, apply 2 to 3 weeks before departure.

Can I travel with a different passport from the one used for the application?

No. The e-Visa is strictly linked to the passport used at the time of application. If you have more than one passport, you must use the same travel document to enter Malawi. Any discrepancy may result in refusal of entry.

Can I send photos of my passport instead of scans?

Yes, good-quality photos taken with a smartphone are accepted, provided that the MRZ (the two lines of characters at the bottom of the data page) is completely legible, without reflection, blurring or tilting. Illegible documents will result in rejection of the application.

Can I contact a Malawian embassy to follow up my case?

No. e-Visa applications are processed exclusively by the Malawi Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services via the online portal. Malawian embassies abroad do not process e-Visa applications and cannot advise you on their status.

Does the e-Visa guarantee entry to Malawi?

No. Possession of an approved e-Visa does not guarantee entry. Malawian immigration officers at ports of entry reserve the right to refuse entry at their discretion, without obligation to provide an explanation. Make sure that all your documents are in order and that your stay is in keeping with the type of visa you have obtained.
