Malawi Visa Requirements: Who Needs an eVisa to Travel?

Malawi has reintroduced visa requirements for most nationalities, including EU, US, and Canadian travelers, via an official eVisa system.

The Malawi government has officially reintroduced visa requirements for the majority of foreign nationals, ending a previous visa-exemption policy.

On January 2, 2026, Internal Security Minister Peter Mukhito announced updated immigration rules for travelers to Malawi. In an official statement, authorities confirmed that visas are now required for travelers from all countries, except for a list of exempted nationalities.

As of January 3, 2026, travelers from European countries, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom no longer benefit from the visa exemption that had been in place since 2024.

The updated procedures require travelers to:

  • Apply for an electronic visa (eVisa) via the official government website evisa.gov.mw.

  • Pay a processing fee of 50 USD.

  • Submit personal and travel details through an online form.

Only citizens of countries within the regional bloc of Malawi that maintain reciprocal visa policies remain exempt from this new requirement.

Which nationalities are exempt?

The following nationalities are not required to obtain a visa for travel to Malawi: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Dominica, Ecuador, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Haiti, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kiribati, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vanuatu.

Key traveler notes

These measures introduce a streamlined border entry system, allowing travelers to obtain an eVisa before arrival and simplify immigration processing. Planning ahead is crucial: since December 2025, Malawi requires foreign visitors to pay for hotel stays in advance using stable currencies such as US dollars, euros, or British pounds.
