Mongolia Visa Exemption Extended to 2027
Mongolia has extended its visa-free entry for citizens of 34 countries until January 1, 2027, building on its post-pandemic tourism boom and economic diversification strategy.
Originally slated to expire on December 31, 2025, Mongolia’s temporary visa-exemption program has been granted a two-year extension by the government. The Embassy of Mongolia in Switzerland has confirmed that nationals of 34 countries may continue to explore the steppes without a visa until January 1, 2027.
This decision cements Ulaanbaatar’s place on the global tourism map beyond the post-Covid trend cycle, supporting a long-term economic vision that reduces reliance on mining.
Proven Open-Door Strategy
The “Visit Mongolia” initiative, launched in 2023, has yielded record results. Over 846 000 international visitors were recorded in 2025, validating the gamble of former prime minister Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene and his successor Gombojavyn Zandanshatar.
For a nation landlocked between Russia and China, this openness is critical to diversifying an economy still dominated by extractive industries. The “Go Mongolia” promotional campaign has successfully repositioned the country as a must-visit destination worldwide.

Who Qualifies?
The original list of 34 beneficiary countries remains unchanged and prioritizes Mongolia’s key Western partners: Allemagne*, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland.
*While Germany already enjoys favorable bilateral arrangements with similar benefits, it is commonly grouped with this cohort in travel communications targeting European visitors.
For travelers in these nations, eligibility rules are straightforward: a valid passport (valid for at least six months beyond the return date) permits a 30-day tourist stay without a visa.

Looking Ahead to 2027—and Beyond
While the exemption is officially confirmed through January 1, 2027, signals point toward a likely permanent policy. Development plans have already been extended through 2028, with a goal to welcome 2 million visitors annually.
For visitors, the window is wide open: improving infrastructure, denser flight links and simplified entry make now the perfect moment to experience Mongolia.
