Electronic visaMongolia requires an e-Visa for any tourist, event-related, or transit stay on its territory. This electronic visa — a genuine online visa issued by the Mongolian authorities — is applied for entirely from home, with no postal mail or consulate visit required. The process is fully digital: you receive an official PDF to print and present upon arrival. Some nationalities do, however, benefit from a visa exemption — temporary or permanent — which should be checked carefully before starting an application.
01 · The essentials
Whatever option you choose, the e-Visa application is completed entirely online, with no postal mail and no visit to a consulate.
A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival is required for all travellers, with or without a visa.
Mongolia offers two types of e-Visa: tourism/event and transit, open to 98 nationalities.

Unlike a travel authorisation such as an ESTA or eTA, the Mongolian e-Visa is a fully-fledged electronic visa, issued directly by the Mongolian authorities. It is not linked to a visa exemption: it is intended for nationals of countries that need a visa to enter Mongolia and who can apply online.
Since 2021, Mongolian consular representations abroad no longer issue tourist, event, or transit visas. Everything now takes place online: no documents to send by post, no consulate window to visit for these purposes. Once you have completed your form and uploaded your attachments, you wait for the authorities' decision. Approval comes in the form of an official PDF that must be printed in colour and presented upon arrival in Mongolia.
Please note: you must be outside Mongolia at the time you submit your application. It is not possible to apply for the e-Visa from Mongolian territory, nor to obtain one if you have submitted a Mongolian visa application too recently.
02 · Eligibility
The question of eligibility for the Mongolian e-Visa is inseparable from that of visa exemptions. Since early 2023, Mongolia has considerably expanded the circle of nationalities exempt from a visa under its national "Visit Mongolia Years" programme. It is therefore essential to check your situation before starting an e-Visa application.
From early 2023 until 1 January 2027, nationals of 34 countries — including France, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Germany and many other EU member states — are exempt from a visa for any tourist stay not exceeding 30 days. This exemption is temporary and linked to Mongolia's tourism recovery programme.
Other nationalities benefit from a visa exemption with no official end date: nationals of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Turkey, Thailand and many other countries for stays of 30 days, or the United States, Brazil, South Korea and several Latin American and Central Asian countries for stays of up to 90 days.
If your nationality is not covered by an exemption, or if your stay exceeds the duration covered by the exemption, you must obtain an e-Visa before travelling to Mongolia. The e-Visa application is open to 98 nationalities worldwide.
34 nationalities, including France, Belgium, Switzerland and the majority of EU countries, are exempt from a visa for any tourist stay of 30 days or fewer. This exemption is linked to the "Visit Mongolia Years" programme and has an official expiry date.
Some countries benefit from an open-ended exemption: 30 days for Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia, Singapore, Turkey and others; 90 days for the United States, Brazil, South Korea, Argentina and several Central Asian countries.
Only three nationalities can obtain a 30-day visa directly upon arrival in Mongolia: India, Kuwait and Qatar. For all other non-exempt nationalities, an online e-Visa application is mandatory before departure.
Whatever your situation — with or without a visa — your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in Mongolia. This rule applies even for a visa-free stay.
03 · The procedure
The e-Visa application process for Mongolia is entirely online. It requires no visit to a consulate and no sending of documents by post. Everything is done from home in a few simple steps. It is advisable to have all your documents ready before starting the form to avoid any interruption during entry.
You enter your identity details, passport number, nationality, the purpose of your trip (tourism, cultural or sporting event, transit), and your planned arrival and departure dates in Mongolia. Each piece of information must correspond exactly to the data in your passport.
For a tourist or transit application, two documents are mandatory: a legible copy of the identity page of your valid passport, and a recent colour identity photo. If your stay is related to participation in a cultural or sporting event, an invitation letter and proof of accommodation booking are also required.
Your file is checked for compliance before being submitted to the Mongolian authorities. This step identifies any errors (incorrect passport number, non-compliant photo) that are the main causes of refusal or additional delays.
The Mongolian authorities examine your application. The processing time is approximately 3 days. This time may vary depending on the period and the workload of the relevant services. It is advisable to submit your application as early as possible after confirming your travel dates, and at least one week before departure.
Once your e-Visa is approved, you receive an official PDF document. It is recommended to print it in colour and keep it with you throughout your stay. You will need to present it upon arrival in Mongolia. If you lose it, contact the support service to obtain a duplicate.
04 · Required documents

The e-Visa application file for Mongolia is relatively lightweight for a tourist stay or transit. Two documents are sufficient in most cases. However, if your trip involves participation in a cultural or sporting event, additional documents are required.
It is important that all your documents are legible, up to date, and consistent with one another. A discrepancy between the information entered in the form and that on the attached documents is one of the main causes of refusal or requests for correction.
05 · Stay conditions
The Mongolian e-Visa is a single-entry visa. It authorises you to enter Mongolia once during its validity period. Once you have left Mongolian territory, the e-Visa is used up and cannot be used for another trip. If you wish to leave and return to Mongolia, a new e-Visa application will be required.
Once issued, you have 150 days to use your e-Visa and enter Mongolia. After this deadline, the authorisation becomes void. You can therefore plan your trip comfortably over several months after obtaining the document, provided you respect this usage window.
The maximum permitted length of stay is 30 days for a tourist or event stay and 10 days for transit. It is not possible to extend the permitted duration from abroad. However, if you are already in Mongolia and wish to stay longer, it is possible to initiate an online visa extension process and then visit a Mongolian immigration centre to finalise your application in person.
For a stay exceeding 30 days or for a purpose not covered by the e-Visa (work, study, business), you must contact the Mongolian Embassy in your country of residence to obtain a standard visa. This type of visa allows stays of 90 to 180 days and covers professional purposes.
06 · Before you leave
Obtaining your e-Visa is a key step, but it is only part of preparing for a trip to Mongolia. This landlocked country between China and Russia, with its vast expanses of steppe, desert and mountains, requires thorough organisation, particularly regarding health, administrative documents and local logistics. Here are the main points to anticipate before departure.
On the health front, no vaccines are compulsory to enter Mongolia. However, health authorities recommend updating the following vaccinations depending on the length and type of stay planned: hepatitis A (recommended for all), hepatitis B (for long or multiple stays), rabies (for long stays), tick-borne encephalitis (for stays in forested or rural areas), and typhoid (for extended stays). A rise in measles cases has also been noted since March 2026 — check that your vaccination is up to date before departure.
You should also find out about weather conditions for the season of your trip: Mongolia experiences extreme temperature variations, hot summers and particularly harsh winters. Pack accordingly.
The Mongolian e-Visa is a genuine electronic visa — not merely a travel authorisation — issued by the Mongolian authorities for tourist stays (max. 30 days), event stays (max. 30 days) and transit (max. 10 days). The process is entirely online, with no consulate visit required. Once issued, it is valid for a single entry within 150 days. First check whether your nationality entitles you to a visa exemption before starting an application: many countries — including the majority of EU member states until 1 January 2027 — benefit from one for short tourist stays. Whatever your situation, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival, and any foreigner staying more than 48 hours in Mongolia must register with the local authorities.
