Destination by destination

The verdict by destination

Ceilings do not change with the destination, but the required level does. Here is what it means for the fifteen most requested destinations, grouped by conclusion.

Four dots per group, one tier each, from Classic to World Elite. Generic HelloSafe profiles, card issued in France; residents of the United States and Canada should use the checker above.

Understand

What a bank card really insures

Insurance tied to payment

Card guarantees only apply if the trip was paid with the card, in full for cancellation. A ticket paid with another card or in cash is not covered.

Four guarantees to look at

Medical expenses and hospitalisation, cancellation, baggage, liability. Ceilings differ a hundredfold between a classic and a premium card. The medical ceiling is what decides.

When the card is not enough

Destinations with expensive healthcare (North America, Asia, Oceania), stays over 90 days, risky sports, travellers over 65 or with a known condition: in those cases the card is a base, not full protection.

A visa may require it

Some destinations require travel insurance with a minimum ceiling to issue the visa or at arrival. Your card's check does not replace that certificate: see the destination page.

Tier profiles

The comparison uses the generic profile of each tier (Visa Classic, Gold, Infinite, World Elite and their Mastercard equivalents), not a specific bank's contract. The wizard maps your card to its tier.

03

Verdict

Insufficient if the medical ceiling is under €150,000 (€300,000 for North America, €30,000 within Europe where the European health card applies). Partial if medical care passes but cancellation or baggage is missing, or if the ceiling stays below HelloSafe's target for the cost of care at the destination (from €30,000 in Europe to €500,000 in the United States). Sufficient otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

Is my bank card a travel insurance?

Yes, all Visa and Mastercard cards include travel assistance and insurance, provided the trip was paid with the card. Ceilings range from a few thousand euros for a classic card to a million for some premium cards.

What is the difference between assistance and insurance?

Assistance (repatriation, emergency medical costs) is included on almost every card and applies even if the trip was not paid with it. Insurance (cancellation, baggage, interruption) is only triggered by paying with the card, usually in full.

How many days am I covered?

Most often 90 consecutive days abroad. For a longer stay, dedicated insurance is needed from day one, not only beyond the 90 days.

Do I need insurance to get a visa?

For some destinations, yes: a certificate with a minimum medical ceiling is required with the visa application or at the border. Your card's check is not such a certificate. See the destination page on Visamundi.

Are the comparison figures my bank's?

No: they are the ceilings of the tier's generic profile, provided by HelloSafe. They give the order of magnitude. Your insurance policy prevails, and some online banks offer higher ceilings than their tier's average.

Does Visamundi sell insurance?

No. Visamundi is a private travel-formalities agency. Links to HelloSafe are partner links: if you buy insurance through their comparison, Visamundi may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.
