Since 2018, Tanzania has offered an electronic visa allowing visits to mainland Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago for tourism or business purposes. This genuine e-Visa — not a mere travel authorisation — is obtained entirely online, with no visit to an embassy required. Note: the Tanzanian application form is known to be lengthy and demanding regarding document formats. Processing times can be long and variable depending on the period. Submit your application at least 10 days before your departure.

01 · The essentials

The Tanzania e-Visa: an electronic visa for Tanzania and Zanzibar

Since 2018

The Tanzanian government introduced the e-Visa in 2018 to visit mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

100% online

The application is made entirely online, with no postal submission or embassy visit required.

6-month passport

A passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of arrival in Tanzania is required of all travellers.

Tanzania e-Visa — online application procedure
The Tanzania e-Visa application is entirely paperless, with no postal submission required.

The Tanzania e-Visa is an official electronic visa introduced by the Tanzanian government in 2018. It is not a simple travel authorisation (like the US ESTA or the Canadian eTA), but a real visa granted to enter and stay in Tanzania, whether on the mainland or in the Zanzibar archipelago. Both territories form the United Republic of Tanzania, and a single e-Visa is sufficient to travel between the mainland and the islands.

The authorisation is issued as an official PDF file to be printed in colour. This document must be presented at check-in and at border controls upon arrival in Tanzania. Once issued, the e-Visa is valid for a single entry and permits a stay of a maximum of 90 days, calculated from the date of actual arrival on Tanzanian territory, not from the date of visa issuance.

An important subtlety: the validity period of your e-Visa is adapted to the stay dates you entered in the application form. Therefore, if you indicate a one-month stay, the authorities will issue a visa authorising a one-month stay, even though the legal maximum is 90 days. Furthermore, once issued, the e-Visa is only valid for entry into Tanzania within the 90 days following its issuance: there is therefore no point in applying too far in advance.

The Tanzania e-Visa covers the entire United Republic of Tanzania, including the Zanzibar archipelago. No additional steps are required to travel from the mainland to the islands. However, since October 2024, Zanzibar requires mandatory medical insurance to be taken out on the official website visitzanzibar.go.tz. The cost varies according to the traveller's age: free for the youngest, 22 USD for teenagers and 44 USD for adults. Remember to check your existing coverage to avoid over-insuring.

02 · Eligibility

Who can apply for an e-Visa for Tanzania?

The Tanzanian electronic visa is accessible to more than 100 different nationalities, including French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals. Only a few nationalities, mostly from East and Southern Africa, are exempt from a visa to enter Tanzania. If your nationality is not on the list of nationalities eligible for the e-Visa, you will need to contact the Tanzanian embassy in your country to apply for a standard visa.

To be eligible for the e-Visa, you must be outside Tanzania at the time of your application. You must not hold a valid Tanzanian residence permit. Finally, you must be able to provide proof of a means of leaving Tanzanian territory (return flight ticket or onward ticket to a third country). It is not necessary to have local contacts in Tanzania to complete the process.

Tourism, volunteering and medical

The Tourist e-Visa covers tourism stays, humanitarian missions (NGOs) and medical trips. For an NGO mission, an invitation letter from the organisation and its NGO Registration Certificate will be required in addition.

Business and conferences

The Business e-Visa is intended for travellers going to Tanzania for professional reasons: business meetings, conferences and professional events. Consular fees are higher than for the tourist visa.

Minors

All travellers, including children and minors, who require a visa must have one. Each traveller, regardless of age, must have their own named visa.

Visa on arrival

Nationalities eligible for the e-Visa may also apply for a visa on arrival in Tanzania, regardless of the entry point (air, sea or land). However, the online procedure is strongly recommended to avoid waiting times and complications on arrival.

Nationality not on the eligible list

If your nationality is not among those authorised to apply for the e-Visa online, you must contact the Tanzanian consulate or embassy responsible for your country of residence. A standard visa (non-electronic) will then need to be requested through consular channels.

03 · The procedure

Obtaining your Tanzania e-Visa online, step by step

The Tanzania e-Visa application process is entirely paperless. You do not need to go to an embassy or send your passport by post. Everything is done online, from filling in the form to receiving the visa electronically. Preparing your documents in advance is key: the Tanzanian form is known to be lengthy and its requirements precise regarding the format and file sizes to be uploaded.

  1. 1
Prepare your documents before you start

Gather the necessary documents: a copy of your passport (valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date in Tanzania), a recent passport-sized photo meeting the required standards, and your return flight ticket. For a professional or humanitarian trip, an invitation letter will also be required. Check the expected file formats and sizes, as the Tanzanian form imposes specific resizing constraints.

  2. 2
    Fill in the online form

Complete the application form with your personal details, passport information, home address, reason for your stay, your arrival and departure dates, and your flight information. Pay particular attention to the consistency between the information entered and your identity documents. An error in the form cannot be corrected after the visa has been issued.

  3. 3
    Upload the supporting documents

Once the form is completed, submit the required scanned documents. Each file must meet the size and format criteria imposed by the Tanzanian portal. If non-compliant, the application risks being rejected at the first review. Prior resizing of images may be necessary.

  4. 4
    Pay the consular fees

Consular fees are paid online by credit or debit card. They amount to 50 USD for the Tourist e-Visa and 235 USD for the Business e-Visa. Payment is made before the final submission of the application to the Tanzanian authorities.

  5. 5
    Processing by the Tanzanian authorities

Your application is examined by the Tanzanian authorities. The processing time is a few days on average, but it may vary and increase considerably during periods of high demand. It is strongly recommended to submit your application at least 10 days before your expected arrival date in Tanzania. Do not submit a duplicate application out of impatience: this can jeopardise your application.

  6. 6
Receipt and printing of the visa

Once granted, the e-Visa is sent to you by email as a PDF file. Print it in colour and keep it in your hand luggage. You will need to present it at check-in (some airlines carry out a prior check) and to immigration officers on arrival in Tanzania.

Good to know
The Tanzania e-Visa can be requested for several travellers simultaneously (family, group, colleagues). Consular fees are multiplied by the number of travellers. Each traveller receives their own named visa. Group applications allow the tracking of the file to be centralised and simplify the collective process.
Complex procedure: do not underestimate the preparation

Tanzania is ranked among the complex destinations for electronic visa applications. The form is particularly long and documents must be resized to specific formats. Processing times are long and unpredictable depending on the period. An error in the form or a non-compliant document can lead to a refusal, with no possibility of amending the issued visa afterwards. Plan your application well in advance.

04 · Entry points

Where to enter Tanzania with an e-Visa?

Entry points eligible for the Tanzania e-Visa — airports and land borders
The Tanzania e-Visa is accepted at 3 international airports and 2 land border crossings.

The Tanzania e-Visa is not valid at all entry points on Tanzanian territory. It is recognised only at 5 official entry points: three international airports and two land borders. If you arrive at another airport, by sea or at another land border post, you will not be able to use your e-Visa. In that case, you will need to have applied for a standard visa from the Tanzanian embassy or to present yourself directly at the port or border post on arrival for a visa on arrival.

Before booking your flights, check that your planned point of arrival is on the list of entry points accepting the e-Visa. This is a common mistake that can have significant consequences on arrival.

Julius Nyerere Airport (Dar es Salaam)

The main international hub of mainland Tanzania, Julius Nyerere Airport is one of the three airports accepting the e-Visa. It serves many European and African destinations.

Kilimanjaro Airport

Ideally located for travellers wishing to quickly reach Kilimanjaro or the national parks of northern Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro), this international airport accepts the e-Visa.

Abeid Amani Karume Airport (Zanzibar)

Serving the Zanzibar archipelago directly, this airport accepts the Tanzanian e-Visa for travellers arriving directly in Zanzibar from abroad.

Land borders: Namanga and Tunduma

Two land border crossings accept the e-Visa: Namanga (Kenya-Tanzania border) and Tunduma (Tanzania-Zambia border). If you are transiting through Kenya, remember that a separate visa or travel authorisation is also required to enter Kenya.

It is important to note that if you leave Tanzania to travel to a neighbouring country (Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, etc.) and wish to return to Tanzania, your initial e-Visa — valid for a single entry — will not allow you to re-enter. You will need to submit a new e-Visa application from abroad. If your itinerary includes a multi-country circuit with a return to Tanzania, take this constraint into account from the planning stage of your trip.

For travellers wishing to transit through Tanzania without staying for an extended period, a transit visa is in theory available, allowing a stay of up to 7 days on the territory. It is necessary to hold an onward ticket to a third country. For this type of visa, you should contact the Tanzanian embassy directly.

05 · Fees & validity

Cost, duration and conditions of the Tanzania e-Visa

The consular fees for the Tanzania e-Visa differ depending on the purpose of the stay. For a tourist, humanitarian or medical stay, the consular fees amount to 50 USD per traveller. For a professional trip (business or conferences), the consular fees are 235 USD per traveller. These amounts are set by the Tanzanian authorities and are exclusive of any service fees.

Once issued, the Tanzania e-Visa authorises a stay of a maximum of 90 days. This period is counted from the date of actual arrival on the territory, not from the date of visa issuance. However, the actual authorised duration depends on the stay dates you entered when making your application: if you indicate a 30-day stay, the visa issued will only cover those 30 days, even though the regulatory maximum is 90 days.

If your stay dates change after the visa has been issued, it is preferable to submit a new e-Visa application with the correct dates, as the visa is issued in accordance with the dates initially declared and cannot be modified once issued. It is also impossible to correct an error made in the form after the visa has been issued.

Regarding extension of stay: it is possible to extend your visa at the Tanzanian Immigration Bureau if you are already on the territory and wish to stay beyond the initially authorised duration. This procedure must be initiated before your current visa expires.

Dates and planning ahead
It is pointless, and even counterproductive, to apply for your Tanzania e-Visa too far in advance. Once issued, the visa is only valid for entry into Tanzania within 90 days of its issuance. Wait until you have your confirmed flights and final dates before submitting your application.

06 · Before you go

Preparing your trip to Tanzania: documents, tips and checklist

Tanzania is an exceptional destination in East Africa, often called the "pearl of Africa" for its remarkable biodiversity. It is particularly known for its vast wild regions preserved from mass tourism, the presence of the famous big five (elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinoceroses), as well as Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, located entirely on Tanzanian territory.

To make the most of your stay, the ideal period is the dry season, from June to October: temperate climate, wildlife visible on safaris, and favourable swimming conditions in Zanzibar. Avoid the summer holiday period and end of year to limit tourist crowds. Beyond the e-Visa, several prior steps are essential for travelling to Tanzania in the best conditions.

Documents and steps to prepare before departure
  • Tanzania e-Visa (official electronic visa)To be applied for at least 10 days before your arrival, once your flights are confirmed. Print your visa in colour and keep it in your hand luggage. In the event of an error in your application, no correction is possible after issuance.
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of arrivalThe Tanzanian authorities require a passport whose expiry date is at least 6 months after your arrival date. Check this point as a priority before any application.
  • Recent passport-sized photo meeting the required standardsA compliant identity photo is required for the e-Visa application. The Tanzanian portal imposes precise format and file size criteria. Prepare your photo in advance and check its compliance before starting the procedure.
  • Return flight ticket (or onward ticket to a third country)Proof that you have a means of leaving Tanzanian territory is mandatory for the e-Visa application and for entry into Tanzania. Your return flight ticket or onward ticket to a third country serves as proof.
  • Invitation letter (if applicable)For a professional or humanitarian trip (NGO), an invitation letter is required. For humanitarian missions, the organisation's NGO Registration Certificate will also be required.
  • Medical insurance for ZanzibarSince October 2024, medical insurance is mandatory to enter Zanzibar. It must be taken out on the official website visitzanzibar.go.tz. The amount depends on the traveller's age. Check whether your existing coverage (bank card, travel insurance) allows you to avoid double coverage.
  • Travel insuranceNot mandatory for obtaining the mainland Tanzania e-Visa (excluding Zanzibar), but strongly recommended. Medical costs in Tanzania can be high for foreign nationals, particularly in the event of hospitalisation or medical evacuation.
  • International payment cardConsular fees are paid by credit or debit card. Check that your card is authorised for online payments in foreign currencies before starting the procedure.
Key takeaways

The Tanzania e-Visa is a genuine electronic visa — not a simple travel authorisation — introduced since 2018 and allowing visits to mainland Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago. It is valid for a single entry and a stay of a maximum of 90 days, from the date of arrival. Consular fees amount to 50 USD for tourism and 235 USD for business. The procedure is entirely online but known to be complex: lengthy form, precise document format requirements, variable processing times. Submit your application at least 10 days before your departure. Do not forget the mandatory medical insurance for Zanzibar since October 2024, to be obtained separately on the official website of the archipelago. Print your visa in colour and present it at check-in and on arrival.

Specifics

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania: the Tanzanian visa remains valid for the archipelago — there is no separate “Zanzibar” visa.

You enter on the Tanzanian e-Visa (or a visa on arrival depending on your nationality). The particularity is recent and mandatory: since 2024, every foreign visitor must take out dedicated Zanzibar travel insurance (Zanzibar Insurance Corporation), paid (about USD 44 for the stay), bought online on the official portal before arrival. Without this proof of insurance, entry can be refused at the airport or port. Also check the validity and covered duration of your e-Visa. In short: paperwork = Tanzania, but Zanzibar adds compulsory health insurance.
