Tanzania set to join East African Visa initiative

Tanzania is poised to integrate the East African Visa, a single-entry permit allowing travel across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and now Tanzania, potentially boosting regional tourism numbers.

The State Minister for Tourism and Wildlife, Dr. Alfred Mutua, concluded the 3rd East African Tourism Expo and the 13th Magical Kenya Travel Expo at the KICC in Nairobi on November 22, 2023. During his closing address, Dr. Mutua called on regional partners to set aside rivalries and unite behind a shared drive to promote the East African tourism sector.

Collective approach urged for East African tourism growth

Dr. Mutua stressed the need for a strategic shift to attract more visitors, proposing a consolidated effort in marketing, regional destination branding, and transforming challenges into opportunities. He outlined a multifaceted strategy that includes:

  • Mapping and showcasing regional tourist attractions,

  • Developing cross-border tour circuits and itineraries,

  • Investing in visitor-facing tourism infrastructure to improve accessibility and comfort.

Streamlining travel across borders

The Minister highlighted the urgent need to simplify visa processes to remove unnecessary frictions. His proposals include rolling out visa-on-arrival or e-visa options to make travel easier for tourists across the region.

Sustainability and visitor safety

Beyond administration, Dr. Mutua underscored the importance of sustainable tourism practices designed to:

  • Enhance visitor experiences through smart technology adoption,

  • Ensure traveller security via robust measures and clear safety communications.

Moving toward a visa-free African continent

The expo closings drew the South Sudanese Minister for Wildlife and Tourism, Lt. Gen Rizik Zakaria, and the South African Deputy Minister of Tourism, Amos Fish. Together, they reaffirmed a shared ambition: unlocking Africa’s vast tourism potential by progressing toward a pan-African visa-free regime to power the industry across the continent.

Tanzania nears joining East African Visa initiative

The East African Visa is a single-entry permit enabling visitors to travel across Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya on one document. The scheme solves the need for multiple visa applications when touring more than one of these destinations within a single trip and helps reduce border delays.

Previously hesitant, Tanzania appears to be shifting course and could soon be part of this regional initiative, permitting visitors to explore Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania under a single visa. Adoption would almost certainly lift tourism numbers across all four countries.
