Peru Launches New Digital Nomad Visa: Key Details and Benefits

Peru introduces a new Digital Nomad Visa allowing remote workers to live and travel in the country for up to a year, with potential extensions. Discover eligibility, benefits, and why Peru is an ideal destination for location-independent professionals.

Peru has just announced the creation of a new visa specifically designed for self-employed and remote workers: the Digital Nomad Visa. With this initiative, the South American country joins a growing group of nations recognizing these future-facing workers as both an economic and cultural opportunity.

What you need to know about Peru’s Digital Nomad Visa

Under newly passed legislation (Legislative Decree 1582), international remote workers employed by or serving clients outside Peru will find it easier to live in the country. The Digital Nomad Visa enables digital professionals to reside and travel freely in Peru for up to one year (with possible extension), taking advantage of the country’s lower cost of living and rich cultural experiences.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Valid passport

  • Remote work for a foreign-based employer or freelance clients outside Peru

  • Minimum income requirement (amount not yet disclosed)

  • International health insurance coverage for the full duration of stay

Note: Holders of the visa may not receive payment for work performed in Peru or be employed by a local company.

Why Peru is a top destination for digital nomads

Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, and Uruguay already offer similar visas, recognizing digital nomads as a way to diversify their economies and welcome foreign residents with new skills and perspectives.

Peru stands out with:

  • Affordable cost of living

  • Well-developed infrastructure for remote work

  • Rich culture and tourism, including the iconic Machu Picchu World Heritage Site

  • Strategic location for exploring South America

Why this could boost Peru’s economy

By rolling out this visa program, the Peruvian government aims to attract more international remote professionals who will boost the local economy through daily spending while being less reliant on seasonal tourism. The new visa, issued by the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones del Perú, is valid for one year and renewable.
