Tanzania Slaps New Tourist Tax on Incoming Flights
Starting 1 November 2024, Tanzania will add a new tourist tax of 45 USD for one-way tickets and 90 USD for round-trips to all airfares, automatically included at checkout.
From 1 November, travellers entering Tanzania by air must pay a new tourist tax—automatically added to the ticket price at the point of sale. The charge differs for one-way versus round-trip tickets, reflecting a second layer of arrivals-related fees introduced by the Tanzanian government since last June.
Mandatory Air-Side Levy
All in-bound flights from 1 November will carry a mandatory surcharge: 45 USD for a one-way fare and 90 USD for a round-trip (currency shown in USD). Infants under two are exempt and no separate payment is required—the tax is seamlessly embedded in the ticket price. The airline or booking portal will display the updated total before final checkout.
Zanzibar’s Compulsory Medical Cover Requirement
Since early 2024, Zanzibar has required all visitors to hold a paid medical-insurance certificate valid for the stay. Costs vary by age: free for children, 22 USD for adolescents, and 44 USD for adults (apply online at visitzanzibar.go.tz). Proof of coverage may be inspected on arrival; visitors without valid insurance risk denied boarding or entry.

EU Bars 35 Tanzanian Airlines from its Airspace
In June 2024, the European Union updated its Air Safety List—removing 35 Tanzanian carriers that now cannot operate in European skies. Travellers should verify carriers on the updated EU list before booking any intra-African or connecting flights.
Local-Currency Rule Takes Effect
The Tanzanian government also requires all settlements to be made in Tanzanian shillings (TZS). Foreign currencies are now strictly prohibited for payments on arrival, aligning with ongoing local-currency enforcement across ministries. Travellers should obtain TZS via ATMs or official exchange counters before entry.
Prepare in advance: updated entry rules—from visa support (e-visa) to mandatory insurance—can be arranged prior to departure to keep your Tanzanian itinerary seamless and compliant.
