Who can obtain an Azerbaijani e-Visa?

Be careful: not every traveller needs an e-Visa. Visa on arrival

ASAN Viza has several characteristics that distinguish it from other electronic visas and that you should fully understand before planning your trip to Azerbaijan.

First characteristic: the visa is single-entry. This means in practice that if you decide, during your stay, to visit neighbouring Georgia or Iran and return, you will need to submit a new ASAN Viza application before re-entering Azerbaijan. For travellers wishing to make return trips, it is possible to obtain a multiple-entry visa, but only through Azerbaijani diplomatic missions, not through the electronic system.

Extension of stay

An extension is possible, but it requires a physical visit to the State Migration Service office in Azerbaijan during your stay. It is not possible to apply online from abroad.

Renewal while in the country

It is not possible to submit a new ASAN Viza application from Azerbaijani territory. You must leave the country before making a new application.

Land borders closed: entry by air only

Since March 2020, Azerbaijan has maintained a special regime closing its land and sea borders to ordinary travellers, for tourism and family visits alike. The measure has been extended several times and remains in force in September 2026, with no announced reopening date. In practice, the country can only be entered by air: a valid ASAN Viza does not allow you to cross a border post with Georgia, Russia, Iran or Turkey, and no visa is issued there. The only exceptions are freight and holders of a special permit — which is not granted for tourism or family visits — while the Baku–Tbilisi rail link restored in May 2026 remains limited to specific categories of travellers. The border with Armenia is closed and cannot under any circumstances be used as a point of entry.

Entry ban linked to Nagorno-Karabakh

Any traveller, of any nationality, who has visited Nagorno-Karabakh or the surrounding formerly occupied territories without the prior authorisation of the Azerbaijani authorities is permanently refused entry to Azerbaijan and placed on a list of undesirable persons (“personae non gratae”). This measure is permanent, applies without exception and overrides any otherwise valid ASAN Visa.

Nationalities and travel histories refused entry

Azerbaijan refuses entry to Armenian nationals and may also refuse it to travellers of other nationalities of Armenian descent. Holders of Kosovo passports and of documents issued by unrecognised entities (Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Transnistria, Somaliland, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic) are also refused. A plain visa or stamp from the Republic of Armenia does not automatically trigger a refusal, but any evidence of a visit to Nagorno-Karabakh leads to the permanent refusal described above.

Regarding purposes of stay, ASAN Viza covers a wide range: tourism, business, conferences, studies, medical reasons, visiting a relative, participation in an event, activity within an NGO. Three areas are rated “do not travel”: the southern border region with Iran — since hostilities between the United States and Iran began on 28 February 2026 the threat of drone and missile strikes has been constant, a strike hit Nakhchivan International Airport on 5 March 2026 and commercial air traffic is severely disrupted; the border with Armenia; and the territories of Aghdam, Aghdara, Fuzuli, Gubadli, Jabrayil, Kalbajar, Khankendi, Khojaly, Khojavend, Lachin, Shusha and Zangilan, because of landmines.
