Electronic visaThe Mauritanian authorities have modernised access formalities to the country. Gone are the uncertain waits at the consulate or long queues on arrival: for most travellers, it is now necessary to obtain an <strong>e-Visa before boarding</strong> for Mauritania.
01 · The essentials
This digital system makes the process much easier. The principle is simple: you submit the application entirely online, receive your authorisation document by email, and on arrival in Mauritania, whether by air or land, a document check validates your entry.
Mauritania still keeps some exemption cases, but for a very large majority of international travellers, the pre-departure e-Visa is now the normal and safest route.
02 · How it works
Gather all required supporting documents before opening the form. Check passport validity, photo compliance, the details of your first accommodation and, if relevant, the consistency of any invitation letter with the purpose of travel.
Access the official ANRPTS platform. Enter your personal details, profession, stay dates, itinerary and any other requested information. Review every field carefully.
Import the colour copy of the passport identity page, the recent photo and any other useful supporting documents. Make sure the files are readable and compliant before submitting.
Once the form is complete and the documents uploaded, send your file through the official platform so that it can be reviewed by the competent authorities.
After submission, the Mauritanian authorities process your request. The average observed timing is around 72 hours, or roughly 3 to 5 working days, but it can take longer if the file is incomplete.
When your application is approved, you receive the visa confirmation by email with its QR code. Keep this document to present it on arrival.
On arrival in Mauritania, whether by air or land, you pay the consular fee on site before the entry control is finalised.
The passport should also contain at least two facing blank pages, otherwise the file may be rejected or boarding refused.
03 · Who needs it
In practice, almost all international travellers can use the Mauritanian e-Visa system. French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals, together with a very large majority of travellers from the European Union, the Americas, Oceania and Asia, are expected to apply online before departure.
Exemptions still exist thanks to bilateral agreements, especially for some African countries. For those travellers, the waiver mainly concerns short tourism stays. If you are unsure, always check the exact rule that applies to your passport before booking.
The exemptions cited here concern in particular Algeria, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Libya, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Tunisia.
The digital rollout moves away from the historical model of visas physically affixed in the passport.
Admission to the territory is finalised on site through biometric data capture.

04 · Why go
