Togo: A little-known gem that's worth discovering

Why do so many travelers fall in love with Togo? Because this country offers a concentration of Africa in a single destination. With an Atlantic coastline to the south and savannahs to the north, it's a complete change of scenery.

Lomรฉ, the capital with two faces

Lomรฉ is one of West Africa's most pleasant capitals. With its modern boulevards and historic districts, it offers a unique atmosphere. Visit Grand Marchรฉ is the beating heart of the city, where the famous โ€œNana Benzโ€ (powerful businesswomen in the textile trade) reign over mountains of colorful loincloths. For a more mystical experience, the Akodรฉssรฉwa Fetish Market remains the reference point for understanding ancestral voodoo practices, which are omnipresent in Togolese culture.

The Plateaux Region: Togo's garden

Just a 2-hour drive from the capital lies Kpalimรฉ. Nestled in a basin surrounded by green hills, this town is a hiker's paradise. Here, you can explore rainforests in search of hidden waterfalls (such as Womรฉ or Kamalo), and visit the famous

tations of coffee and cocoa. It's also the center of Togolese crafts: potters, woodcarvers and batiks abound.

The Koutammakou: A journey through time

Further north, in the Kara region, is the site of the Koutammakou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is the home of the Batammariba people, famous for their Takienta. These earthen fortress-houses, with their turrets and attics, are masterpieces of traditional architecture. It's a place where time seems to have stood still, offering a lesson in the harmony between man and his environment.

Relaxation on Lake Togo

To round off your stay in style, a stopover at Agbodrafo Or Togoville is a must. Cross Lake Togo by pirogue to Togoville, the village that gave its name to the country. It's a place steeped in history, where animist sanctuaries and Catholic churches mingle, a symbol of the country's exemplary religious tolerance.

Is it possible to obtain a visa on arrival in Togo?

No. Togo no longer issues visas on arrival. The Togolese authorities have officially suspended visas on arrival and express visas ยซuntil further noticeยป. All applications must be made online at least 5 days before arrival. Showing up at an entry point without a valid e-Visa (and without being a national of an exempted country) will result in refusal of entry.

What is the maximum length of stay?

The maximum length of stay with an e-Visa is 90 days for the longest option. However, the authorities reserve the right to restrict the length of stay actually granted. For stays longer than 90 days, please contact the Togolese embassy in your country or the Direction Gรฉnรฉrale de la Documentation Nationale in Lomรฉ.

Do I need a visa to transit Togo?

Yes, if you are transiting through Togo and need to pass through immigration (for example, if you are leaving the airport transit zone or transiting by land), an e-Visa is required unless you are a national of an exempted country. A 15-day single-entry e-Visa is generally sufficient for transit.

Do children need an e-Visa?

Yes, all travelers, regardless of age, must have their own e-Visa (except nationals of exempted countries). Minor children must have their own valid passport, and an individual application must be submitted for each. It is advisable to travel with a copy of the birth certificate and, if the child is traveling without both parents, an authorization to leave the country.

Do I need to print the e-Visa?

We strongly recommend that you print out your e-Visa and present it to immigration officials when you arrive in Togo, in addition to your passport. You should also keep a digital copy on your telephone in case you lose the printed document. Some land border posts may not have electronic verification systems, so the paper version is essential.

Is the e-Visa accepted at land borders?

Yes, the Togolese e-Visa is accepted at all official entry points: Lomรฉ's Gnassingbรฉ Eyadema international airport (LFW) and land border crossings with Ghana (Aflao/Kodjoviakopรฉ), Benin (Hilacondji, Tohoun) and Burkina Faso (Cinkassรฉ). Present a printed copy of your e-Visa to immigration officials.

What should I do if my application is rejected?

If your application is rejected, check that all the information you have entered is correct and that the documents are legible and compliant. You can submit a new application, correcting any errors. If the application is still refused, contact travel.gouv.tg support or the Togolese embassy in your country. If you applied via Visamundi, you will receive a full refund in the event of refusal.

Are there any special formalities for ECOWAS nationals?

Nationals of ECOWAS countries are visa-exempt, but may be required to complete an immigration form online at voyage.gouv.tg prior to arrival. This form is separate from the visa application. It is advisable to check the current requirements on the official platform. The yellow fever vaccination certificate remains compulsory for all travelers, including ECOWAS nationals.
