Electronic visaSince 11 May 2026, Chad has shifted to a fully digital immigration policy: the e-Visa is now the only valid entry route for the vast majority of international travellers. Embassy-affixed visas and visas on arrival have been abolished for tourism, business and family stays. The process is available 24 h/24 from any country, the processing time is 3 to 5 working days, and three options cover stays of 15, 30 or 90 days — all with multiple entries.
01 · The essentials
Since 28 April 2026, the US State Department has classified Chad at Level 4: 'Do Not Travel', its highest alert level. Reasons cited include crime, terrorism, kidnapping, the presence of landmines, and inadequate local health infrastructure. This classification applies to the entire Chadian territory. The US government strongly advises its nationals against any travel to Chad.
Travellers of all nationalities are urged to consult their own government's official travel advisories before departure. Security conditions can change rapidly; travel insurance including medical and security evacuation is strongly recommended.
Since 11 May 2026, the e-Visa is the only valid entry route for the vast majority of international travellers: the entire process is carried out online, 24 h/24, with no trip to an embassy.
Chad offers three e-Visa durations (15, 30 and 90 days), all with multiple entries, covering tourism, business, transit, conference, studies and family visits.
The Chadian authorities require minimal information and the official portal evisa.td is straightforward to use, although available in French only.

Chad has profoundly modernised access to its territory. Since 11 May 2026, the e-Visa has become the single, mandatory standard for entry into Chad for the vast majority of international travellers subject to a visa requirement. A short grace period was granted until 21 May 2026; after that date, any visa obtained outside the official digital channel is considered invalid and does not permit entry into the country.
In practice, this means that physical visa stickers issued by embassies or consulates no longer exist for tourism, business or family visit purposes. The visa on arrival has also been abolished. Only diplomatic and courtesy visas continue to be processed through traditional physical channels. For any other purpose, it is mandatory to obtain the e-Visa online before departure.
It is important to stress that this e-Visa is a genuine electronic visa — and not a travel authorisation reserved for nationals already exempt from a visa requirement (such as a US ESTA or a Canadian eTA). The Chadian e-Visa replaces the former visa affixed in the passport and confers the same rights of entry into the territory.
The digitisation of the Chadian visa is recent and many unofficial websites are taking advantage of this novelty to offer dubious services or submit applications on behalf of travellers without their consent. The only official government portal is evisa.td. Be wary of any other site claiming to issue a Chadian e-Visa: you risk arriving with an invalid document.
02 · Eligibility
Chadian visa policy distinguishes three main categories of travellers. Before starting any application, it is essential to determine which category applies to you.
The e-Visa is aimed at all nationalities subject to a visa requirement to enter Chad. If you hold a French, Belgian, Swiss, Canadian, British, German, Australian or most other passports, you must obtain this document online before your flight. There is no valid alternative. Attempting to enter the country without a valid e-Visa will result in being turned back at the airport or border post.
American citizens are subject to a separate regime and are not covered by the standard e-Visa system. They must contact the competent Chadian diplomatic mission to find out the procedure applicable to their situation. If you travel on a US passport, check with the Chadian embassy before departure to confirm the correct application route.
A limited number of countries benefit from a visa exemption for short stays, mainly under the regional agreements of Central Africa (CEMAC) and West Africa (ECOWAS), as well as a few bilateral agreements. Nationals exempt from a visa include those of: Barbados, Benin, Bermuda, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Dominica, United Arab Emirates, Gabon, Gambia, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Cook Islands, Mauritius, Malaysia, Mali, Micronesia, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Singapore and Suriname.
If your nationality does not appear on this list, the e-Visa is mandatory. If you are unsure of your situation, it is advisable to check your eligibility before starting any application process.
Nationals of France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain and all European countries not listed in the exemption list must obtain an e-Visa before entering Chad.
Canadian and Australian citizens are subject to the e-Visa requirement to enter Chad. There is no simplified regime for these nationalities.
American citizens are not covered by the standard e-Visa system. They must check with the Chadian embassy to find out the procedure applicable to their specific situation.
Nationals of CEMAC and ECOWAS member countries, as well as a few other nationalities linked to Chad by a bilateral agreement, benefit from a visa exemption for short stays.
The Chadian e-Visa caters to a wide variety of traveller profiles:
03 · The procedure
The Chadian e-Visa application process is entirely online. No visit to an embassy or consulate is required. The application is submitted online via the official government portal, 24 h/24 from any country in the world. The site is available in French only — which may present a challenge for non-French-speaking travellers, but is not a major obstacle for European nationals.
Make sure your nationality is subject to a visa requirement to enter Chad (and not exempt). Also check that your passport is valid for the entire planned duration of your stay, and ideally beyond.
Select the duration that matches your plans: 15 days, 30 days or 90 days. All options have multiple entries and cover tourism, business, transit, conference, studies and family visits. The 90-day option is particularly useful if you plan several rotations on the same mission.
Collect the required documents: a colour digital scan of your passport (legible biographical page), a compliant identity photo, proof of yellow fever vaccination (mandatory on entry), and any supporting documents related to the purpose of your stay (hotel booking, invitation, flight tickets, etc.).
Fill in the form on the evisa.td portal, providing all requested information: personal details, purpose of travel, arrival and departure dates, accommodation details in Chad, and the planned entry point (N'Djamena airport or other).
Pay the consular fees corresponding to the chosen option. Payment is made online via the secure platform. Technical fees of approximately 1 600 XAF are added to the base consular amount at the time of payment on the platform.
The standard processing time is 3 to 5 working days on average. To avoid any risk, submit your application at least two weeks before your departure date: this gives you a comfortable margin to correct any issue or wait for a slightly longer than expected processing time.
Once your application is approved, you will receive your e-Visa. Print it in colour (the QR code must be legible) and present it upon landing in N'Djamena. Also keep a digital copy in your email inbox or on an online storage service.

The Chadian e-Visa covers a wide range of stay purposes, making it a particularly versatile document:
This same document, regardless of the option chosen (15, 30 or 90 days), authorises multiple entries throughout its entire validity period. You can therefore enter and exit Chad several times without having to apply for a new visa for each stay.
04 · Fees and timelines
Consular fees are set by the Chadian authorities and denominated in Central African CFA Franc (XAF). The euro equivalents shown are provided for guidance only: they fluctuate with the current exchange rate. The authoritative amount is the one in XAF displayed on the official portal.
In addition to these consular fees, approximately 1 600 XAF in technical fees are charged at the time of payment on the platform, as well as any service fees related to assistance and file verification if you use an authorised intermediary.
The standard processing time is 3 to 5 working days under normal conditions. This period may be slightly longer during peak demand or if there is an anomaly in the application. Submitting your request at least two weeks before departure gives you a comfortable margin to address any potential issue.
Once issued, the e-Visa authorises multiple entries into Chad throughout the entire validity period of the document. You therefore do not need to apply for a new visa each time you enter: the 90-day option is particularly advantageous for travellers who need to make several rotations (humanitarian workers, oil sector professionals, field researchers).
05 · Additional formalities
Important: the e-Visa does not exempt you from other mandatory entry requirements for Chad. The international yellow fever vaccination certificate is required on arrival and also conditions your access to the territory. Without this document, you may be refused entry even if your e-Visa is valid. Make sure your vaccination is recorded in your international vaccination booklet (Yellow Card) and that the date complies with the health requirements in force.
The modernisation of the Chadian visa system should not overshadow the other essential preparations for a trip to this part of Central Africa. Here are the key points to check alongside your e-Visa application:
This is the most important health formality. The international vaccination booklet with proof of yellow fever vaccination is mandatory to enter Chad. This vaccination must have been administered before your departure and duly recorded in your international health booklet. Check with your doctor or an accredited vaccination centre that your protection is up to date.
Your passport must be valid for the entire planned duration of your stay in Chad. It is strongly recommended that it has sufficient validity beyond your return date and enough blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
The e-Visa is valid for entry into Chad through official entry points, including the Hassan Djamous International Airport in N'Djamena. Make sure the entry point you plan to use is covered by your e-Visa when you apply.
Yellow fever vaccination is a legal condition of entry into Chad. Check your vaccination booklet before finalising your trip: without this document, the e-Visa alone does not permit entry into the territory.
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay and have blank pages for stamps from the Chadian authorities.
The official evisa.td portal is available in French only. For non-French-speaking travellers, this may present a challenge when completing the form — but the process remains relatively straightforward.
On arrival in N'Djamena, you must present your e-Visa printed in colour with the QR code legible. Prepare the printout before departure and also keep a digital copy.
06 · Before you go
Beyond obtaining the e-Visa, a trip to Chad requires thorough preparation. Here are the key points to anticipate before your departure, based on information available in the official e-Visa conditions and source data.
The Chadian e-Visa is a fully online process, accessible from any country in the world, 24 h/24. The reform that came into force on 11 May 2026 abolished the former physical channels (embassy, visa on arrival) for the vast majority of travellers. Three multiple-entry options are available: 15, 30 or 90 days. Processing time is 3 to 5 working days.
The main point to watch concerns not the visa itself, but the health formalities: the yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory to enter Chad and conditions access to the territory independently of the e-Visa. Check your vaccination booklet well in advance of departure. Also, be wary of unofficial websites: the only government portal is evisa.td. For US nationals, a separate process with the Chadian embassy is required, as they are not covered by the standard e-Visa system.
