Ghana Launches Official E-Visa Portal with Key Travel Updates

Ghana debuts its national e-Visa system, eliminating fees for African passport holders and simplifying entry for all travelers through a 100 % digital process.

The Ghanaian government has officially launched its national electronic visa (e-Visa) portal, significantly altering entry requirements to the country. Led by President John Dramani Mahama, this initiative introduces a streamlined digital process for travelers worldwide.

A pivotal policy accompanies the rollout: the removal of visa fees for all African passport holders, further supporting regional integration and mobility across the continent.

Streamlined Entry to Ghana

Previously, securing a Ghanaian visa could present challenges, especially for travelers distant from a consular office. The new e-Visa system removes physical barriers by digitizing the entire procedure. Applicants from non-exempt countries must now submit documents, pay consular fees, and receive their travel authorization via email before departure.

While most international travelers are eligible for the e-Visa, nationals of ECOWAS member states enjoy visa-free entry for stays up to 90 days.

The Accra administration’s objective is clear: modernize entry infrastructure and position Ghana as a leading tourist and commercial hub in West Africa.

African Travelers Exempt from Visa Fees

Aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals, Ghana has waived visa application fees for all African nationals, underscoring its commitment to intra-African collaboration.

Key takeaway:
The exemption applies solely to visa processing fees. African travelers must still complete the digital registration for security and border tracking purposes, but final costs incurred will be zero.

This policy significantly benefits African business travelers, investors, and tourists by easing cross-border movement across the continent.

Step-by-Step: How to Secure a Ghanaian E-Visa

For international visitors, the e-Visa is the standard pathway to entry. Below is a concise guide to ensure a smooth application process.

1. Essential Documents to Upload
Before starting your online form, prepare readable scans (PDF or JPEG) of the following items, as mandated by the portal:

- Valid Passport: must be valid for at least six months post-travel return and have two blank pages.
- Recent Biometric Photo: must meet standard visa photo requirements and have a neutral background.
- Proof of Accommodation: a confirmed hotel reservation or a notarized invitation letter from a Ghanaian host.
- Round-Trip Flight Booking: a copy of the itinerary.
- International Vaccination Certificate: the yellow fever vaccine is mandatory to enter Ghana.

2. Processing Timeframes
Though the system is automated, standard processing typically takes four days. To account for peak travel periods such as "Detty December" or the "Year of Return" festival, travelers should apply at least seven to ten business days in advance.

3. Fee Structure (Excluding African Passport Holders)
Applicants from countries outside Africa must pay government fees, which depend on travel type (tourism, business, transit) and duration (single or multiple entry). Payment is made securely online. The minimum consular fee is set at 260 USD.
