Visa & Mastercard blocked in Cuba: 5 ways to pay in 2026

Cuba will suspend all Visa and Mastercard transactions from June 6, 2026. Discover 5 reliable ways to pay on the island, from cash to UnionPay and Mir.

The Central Bank of Cuba has formally confirmed a sweeping restriction: all Visa and Mastercard transactions across the island will be suspended starting Saturday, 6 June 2026.

Why is Cuba banning Visa & Mastercard?

This move is a direct response to tightened U.S. economic sanctions that have pushed foreign banks outside Cuba to sever ties with FINCIMEX SA, the financial arm of GAESA—the Cuban state conglomerate that controls much of the island’s tourist infrastructure.

Without any legal or technical route to process these payments, the Cuban Central Bank had no alternative but to suspend all payment terminals and ATMs linked to the two U.S.-based card networks.

Which travellers will be affected?

Until now, only cards issued by U.S. banks were blocked. From 6 June 2026, every Visa and Mastercard—regardless of country of issue (France, Spain, Canada, Mexico, China, the UAE, etc.)—will no longer work anywhere in Cuba.

Whether you’re heading to Cuba for leisure (with a tourist visa/card) or for business, you must re-engineer your financial logistics before boarding your flight.

What will stop working on 6 June 2026?

  • Cash withdrawals (Cuban Peso / CUP) from ATMs (CADECA or local banks) using a Visa or Mastercard.

  • Direct card payments at state-run hotels, restaurants, car-rental agencies and excursion counters.

5 practical ways to pay and fund your trip

Even though Visa and Mastercard will be disabled, several legal and tested options remain.

1. Carry euros or US dollars in cash

  • Which bills to bring? Euros (€) or US dollars ($) are widely accepted throughout the island.

  • Where can they be used? You can settle payments at private Casas Particulares (homestays), ethnic-typical Paladares (restaurants), taxis and shops for souvenirs.

  • Pro tip: Bring small- and mid-denomination notes—5, 10, 20 and 50—to smooth change-giving; larger bills often require complex refunds.

2. Buy a local prepaid card

For state-run services—hotels, car hire, fuel—purchase a Cuban-issued prepaid card in convertible currency at an official CADECA bureau (airport or city-centre locations).

  • The Clásica or Tropical card: Load the card with euros or dollars at a CADICA desk; use it solely for official tourist expenditures.

3. Use UnionPay (if you hold a Chinese-issued card)

UnionPay, China’s dominant payment network, remains functional at compatible terminals across Cuba.

4. Consider Mir (if you hold a Russian-issued card)

Mir, Russia’s national payment system, is accepted in some Cuban establishments; check terminal signage before attempting a purchase.

5. Load euros via Western Union or similar transfer platforms

Send euros via Western Union or an equivalent service to designated pick-up points in Cuba, then withdraw in local currency to spend.

Cuba travel checklist – June 2026 edition

Tick these boxes to avoid being stranded on arrival in Havana, Varadero or Santiago de Cuba.

  1. Budget in full: Estimate your total outlay (lodging, food, transport, extras) and carry that entire amount in euros or US-dollar cash before you leave home.

  2. Validate your passport: Ensure it’s valid for the planned stay.

  3. Obtain the mandatory tourist visa / card: Don’t let paperwork derail your vacation.

  4. Secure the obligatory travel-insurance certificate: Cuba now requires proof of medical coverage in-country.
