Canada unveils its new (and stunning) passport

Canada's redesigned passport replaces historic icons with vibrant nature illustrations, prioritizing its landscapes and wildlife while boosting security features.

Canada’s newly unveiled federal passport will place greater emphasis on the country’s stunning natural beauty and less on its historical significance and landmark sites. This redesign took a decade of work.

According to Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, the refreshed design—meant to showcase the country’s diversity, openness, and natural beauty—was inspired by public feedback on what Canada represents.

The current passport features images of notable people and landmarks, such as the Central Block of the Parliament Buildings, the Stanley Cup, and Nellie McClung.

Now, these photographs will be replaced in the new booklet by illustrations of wildlife—such as bears, narwhals, and owls—as well as scenes of people enjoying outdoor activities, like children diving into a lake, replacing former images of man-made structures.

The designers have also added a large maple leaf to the cover, in addition to the coat of arms previously featured on passport covers. The new booklet includes enhanced security elements to better protect Canadians’ identities. A kinegram will be added to the main photo page to deter counterfeiters.

The new passport also introduces a polycarbonate data page integrated with a microcontroller chip within the page body—a technology currently used in the country’s driver’s licenses. Holder information will now be laser-etched rather than printed.

The Canadian passport ranks among the world’s top 10 most powerful travel documents, offering visa-free access to over 140 countries. In March, it was named one of the 10 most beautiful passports in the world by Condé Nast Traveller.

New Canadian passports will begin rolling out in summer 2023 as existing stock is used up, Immigration Minister Karina Gould confirmed. Older passports remain valid.
