Ethiopia Suspends Visa on Arrival Over Security Concerns
Ethiopia halts on-arrival visas for non-resident foreigners amid escalating security issues and political unrest, advising travelers to secure visas in advance.
The Ethiopian government has announced the suspension of on-arrival visas for non-resident foreign nationals at all entry points into the country due to escalating security concerns and the current political situation.
The temporary visa restriction measure came into force on 29 September 2022.
The announcement was made by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, advising Nigerian citizens holding standard passports who intend to travel to Ethiopia to obtain the appropriate entry visa from the Ethiopian Embassy or through an e-Visa via the country’s Immigration and Citizenship Service portal. According to the ministry, Ethiopian authorities have cited the move as a way to better regulate the flow of people into the country given the ongoing armed conflict in the north.
This restriction is described as temporary, pending an improvement in the country’s security situation, and does not supersede Ethiopia’s overall visa openness policy.
Data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows Ethiopia is Africa’s third-largest host of refugees, sheltering more than 924,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, mainly from South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea.
