Gibraltar UK passport holders can now apply for India e-Visa

UK passport holders issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man can now use the Indian e-Visa system after a long-standing issue from 2019 was finally resolved. Following collaboration between Indian and UK authorities, residents of these British territories are now fully eligible for this streamlined online service.

India e-Visa fully accessible to Gibraltar passport holders

Since 20 December 2023, British passport holders issued in Gibraltar have been able to access India’s e-Visa portal. The move addresses a technical hurdle encountered in 2019 when the e-Visa application system failed to recognize passports issued from Gibraltar and other British Overseas Territories.

Number Six, the government of Gibraltar, expressed its appreciation to Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami and his team for their joint work with Gibraltar and UK officials to resolve the issue. The High Commission of India confirmed that access to the Indian e-Visa system now extends to British passport holders issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man.

How to apply for an India e-Visa as a Gibraltar passport holder

Residents and passport holders in these territories can apply online by following these simple steps:

• Visit the official India e-Visa portal or use a specialized visa agency.

• Complete the online application, including personal details, passport number and other required information.

• Pay the e-Visa fee securely online.

• Receive confirmation and your e-Visa by email within a few days.

• Print the e-Visa—it must be presented to Indian authorities upon arrival in the country and is also recommended at check-in for air travelers.

The simplified process saves time and avoids the usual delays and complications associated with traditional embassy or consulate-based visa applications.

Types of Indian e-Visas available

Travelers can choose from several e-Visa categories tailored to their purpose:

• e-Tourist Visa: for leisure travel, cultural visits or informal meetings with up to two entries or more.

• e-Business Visa: for commercial activities such as conferences, trade visits or meetings.

• e-Medical Visa: designated for medical treatment in India and for accompanying attendants.

With this access now restored, residents of Gibraltar and the other British Overseas Territories can travel to India more conveniently and with far less administrative burden.
