India Expands Categories for Its e-Visa System

India has broadened its electronic visa (e-Visa) categories to include transit, mountaineering, filming, electronic production investment, and entry visas, reducing consular visits and cutting processing times to 24-78 hours.

The Government of India has announced an expansion of the categories offered under its electronic visa (e-Visa) system, introducing new purpose-specific travel options that will dramatically streamline the process for many international visitors.

This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by Indian authorities to modernise and expedite immigration procedures. By widening access to e-Visas, India aims to boost international tourism, making entry and stay within the country more straightforward for foreign travellers.

Newly Added e-Visa Categories

Four new e-Visa categories have been added to India’s existing visa framework: transit, mountaineering, filming, electronic production investment, and entry (for persons of Indian origin).

The inclusion of these categories simplifies the application process by removing the need for in-person consular visits and promises significantly faster processing times. Applicants can now expect their e-Visa applications to be processed in 24 to 78 hours—a marked improvement over traditional consular turnarounds.

Eligible travellers may complete the full e-Visa application process online, although prior approval from the relevant Indian ministry may still be required in certain cases. Before travelling to India, they must secure an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Upon arrival, foreign nationals will be required to attend biometric registration at immigration control, after which the visa will be stamped into their passport.
