India Resumes Issuing Tourist Visas to Chinese Citizens

India officially reopens tourist visa issuance for Chinese travelers starting July 24, 2025, ending a five-year freeze and sparking hopes for renewed tourism and cultural exchanges.

After a five-year suspension, India officially reinstates tourist visa issuance for Chinese travelers starting July 24, 2025. The move, announced by the Indian Embassy in China via its Sina Weibo account, represents a significant shift in the country’s migration policy toward China and paves the way for a resurgence in tourism and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Background to the reinstatement

Suspension of electronic visas was first imposed in 2020 in response to both the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing diplomatic tensions. For years, the interruption had severely restricted travel flows between the two countries. Tourism, hospitality, and education industries have long anticipated this thaw.

Tourism, diplomacy, and culture-led goals are expected from India’s decision to reopen visas to Chinese visitors:

  • Revitalized bilateral tourism: Travel professionals anticipate a swift recovery of outbound Chinese tourism to India, expected to boost local economies nationwide.

  • Enhanced cultural exchanges: Reopening borders supports the resumption of cultural, academic, and scientific events between both nations.

  • Better diplomatic relations: This goodwill gesture, framed as an overture to de-escalation, may help ease long strained Sino-Indian relations.

How to obtain the e-visa

Chinese citizens may now apply for tourist visas at Indian consular offices. The process includes the following steps:

  • Complete an online application form

  • Book an appointment at one of three Indian visa application centers: Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou

  • Finalize the application by submitting required documents

Outlook

The decision is expected to gradually restore confidence between the two countries and strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors. Travel industry stakeholders, students, and intercultural exchange professionals universally welcome the initiative, seeing it as a catalyst for fresh, positive dynamics in the region.
